Even though Michigan is the Great Lakes State, there are other beautiful bodies of water to be celebrated as well. August is the perfect month to take advantage of their beauty due to  various water events coming to southeast Michigan. So whether you’re looking for competitive races, dragon boats, or the best fishermen in the world, we’ve got three events coming up in August that will have you taking advantage of southeast Michigan’s beautiful waters.

OABI (8/12)

OABI (which stands for Once Around Belle Isle) is entering its sixth season of competitive races on the Detroit River. The main event is the 7-Mile OABI Race, which pits veteran paddle boaters, kayakers, and surfski racers against each other in an all-natural and non-buoyed race. If you’re new to any of those forms of water transportation you can sign-up for a variety of different classes including kayak fishing 101, paddle boat techniques, or even beginner stand up paddle boating (SUP) yoga classes.

The beach party will feature performances from Dead Again and Keller Williams, and plenty of food trucks including Detroit BBQ Company, Nosh Pit Detroit, and Treat Dreams! Races, paddle boating, concerts, and delicious food make for one jam-packed day at this year’s OABI at the Detroit River.

Dragon on the Lake (8/24-8/27)

Even though there won’t be any real dragons at this year’s Dragon on the Lake Festival on Lake Orion, there are still plenty of reasons to check it out. The festival starts on Thursday, August 24 and will include concerts from local bands, local food vendors, and of course, the opening night foam party.

This is how you Traverse Michigan. With cutting edge technology, tons of cargo space, and advanced safety features, Chevy Traverse is your key to unlocking the mitten state.

There’s a lot of fun to be had on the lake too. Activities include a lighted boat parade which will take place Friday night, dragon boat practice on Saturday afternoon, and the main event, dragon boat races will start Sunday morning.

So even though no real dragons will be making an appearance, this year’s Dragon on the Lake Festival is sure to be on fire.

Bass, Brews & BBQ Festival (8/25-8/27)

Featuring everything in its title, the 2017 Bass, Brews & BBQ Festival will take over Lake St. Clair Metropark on Friday, August 25. The festival is part of the BassMaster Elite Series Fishing Tournament and will showcase the best bass fishermen in the world competing for the top prize. The competition will feature daily launches, weigh-ins, and your chance to be up close with world-class fishermen. To go along with the tournament, the festival will also feature the state’s best craft beer, concerts, family entertainment, and of course, the best BBQ around.
