It seems appropriate that March is National Reading Month, as it is also the birth month of literary icon Dr. Seuss!

This month, rekindle your love with literature through bookstores, events at local libraries, book clubs and more that will allow your affection for words to soar.

Independent Bookstores

Pages Bookshop

Adventure starts with a vehicle that’s up for anything. Trailblazer combines comfort you want, the versatility you need, and the technology to make every moment count.

An independent bookstore located in Detroit’s Grandmont Rosedale neighborhood, Pages stocks books of all genres, from contemporary fiction to children’s literature. Upcoming author events include Reading and Conversation with young adult author Jean Alicia Elster on Saturday, Feb. 20.

Nicola’s Books

Known as Ann Arbor’s premier independent bookstore, the shelves are filled with new releases, best sellers and more. The store holds kid-friendly events frequently, including librarian storytime each Tuesday morning.

Next Saturday, author Owen Laukkanen will discuss his latest novel, “The Watcher in the Wall.”

Additional independent bookstores in metro Detroit include The Next Chapter Bookstore & Bistro (Northville), John  K. King Used & Rare Books (Detroit) and Read it Again Books (Novi).

Local Libraries

Ferndale Public Library

Baby and toddler storytime are great weekly events for little ones, while various book clubs are great for adults. There’s even a Sewing Group that meets on the third Saturday of each month! (Not reading-related, sure, but still gets you to the library).

Detroit Public Library

Detroit Reads!, a program of the DPL, aims to erase illiteracy in Detroit by providing adult literacy services, such as tutoring, computer skills training and learner practice kits.

If you covet first editions, check out the library’s Rare Book Collection, found in the main branch.

A great way to find likeminded readers is by visiting meetup.com, where you can join a book club of avid readers right here in metro Detroit.

Enjoy making your way through as many books as you can this month!
