This year is showing absolutely zero signs of slowing down. Believe it or not we are already at Memorial Day weekend, and, in many people’s eyes, that means the “unofficial start of summer.”  If you’re looking to celebrate this weekend, here are a few ideas.

Run a race

If you’re an avid runner, or just starting to pick up running, there are plenty of options on Memorial Day. The Novi Memorial Day Run (5k, 10k, one-mile fun run), Grosse Ile Memorial Day Run (5K, 8K) and Pinckney Memorial Day Run (5K, one-mile fun run) all take place this Monday. Grosse Ile’s race is certified by USA Track and Field.

Attend a parade

Parades are always a great way to celebrate a holiday. Several metro Detroit cities are set to host a parade event during this extended weekend. Madison HeightsRoyal OakSouth LyonSt. Clair ShoresFarmingtonWestland  and Northville are some of the participants. The Madison Heights event also includes a pancake breakfast!

Movement Electronic Music Festival

A staple of Memorial Day weekend here in Detroit, the event starts tomorrow at Hart Plaza and runs through Monday. With more than 120 electronic music artists performing on six separate stages, the festival draws more than 100,000 each year. Check out the lineup and purchase tickets online.

With best-in-class cargo space, top of the line safety features, and cutting edge technology, the Chevy Suburban is perfect for any family. See the Suburban's available features that can keep up with your family's lifestyle.

Have a cookout

Like any holiday, it is always fun to get together with family and loved ones for some grub on the grill. Go to a local grocery store such as Joe’s ProduceJohnny Pomodoro’s or Westborn Market to grab fresh meat, veggies, fruits, sides and, of course, dessert!

Attend a carnival, ceremony or festival

Hazel Park kicked off its annual Memorial Weekend Festival yesterday, which includes a carnival, parade, live music, a car show, refreshment tent and more. The event runs through Monday. Other cities hosting a ceremony or Memorial Day/spring festival include LivoniaRochester, Southfield and more.

While celebrating, please keep in mind what this holiday is really about – remembering those who lost their lives protecting this country. Have a safe and happy holiday weekend, everybody!
