While you may feel your willpower falter several weeks into your New Year’s diet, don’t let your commitment wane! It might be easier to reach for a piece of pizza or frozen meal when your tummy starts to grumble, but a lunch chock full of greens and veggies is a much healthier choice.

You might be surprised to find that several salad shops in the Metro Detroit area offer tastier choices than whatever frostbitten item you were thinking about microwaving.

If the word “salad” brings wilted greens and bland dressing to mind, you’ll change your tune once you visit one of the following:

Green Room Salad Bar, 127 W. Congress, Detroit, is the perfect place to assemble a salad on your lunch break. Choose from a variety of lettuces and toppings including iceberg, field greens, spinach, wasabi peas, bleu cheese, Canadian bacon and more.

Families are always on the go, and the Trailblazer combines safety, comfort and accessibility to fit your family's needs. Discover the available features that make Trailblazer an ideal family SUV.

A rotation of soups are available daily, including tasty choices like Turkey Chili, Thai Fire Chicken, Spinach and Feta, and Portabella Wild Rice. They also have a selection of pre-made sandwiches for purchase, courtesy of Detroit’s Lunch Box Deli.

Insalata, 1919 W. Big Beaver, Troy, has a self-serve salad bar that is the perfect alternative to a fast food lunch. Get yourself started with four different greens, then add your choice of over 40 toppings and 15 dressings. Panini sandwiches, specialty sandwiches, soup and baked potatoes are also available.

Skip the sugary soda with your salad and opt for a protein-filled fruit smoothie, in flavors like Peach Dream, Florida Sunshine and Chocolate Chill.

The Big Salad, 19595 Mack Ave., Grosse Pointe Woods, offers over 10 entrée salads as well as a build-your-own bar. Big and 2-Big salads include the Baja salad, Asian chicken salad, and Mediterranean salad, amongst others.

If you opt for the self-serve option, you can top your lettuce with everything from avocado to artichoke hearts to garbanzo beans. I would recommend topping it off with a unique dressing, like Wasabi and Cucumber or Chardonnay Chenin Blanc.

Salad Creations, 18349 Hall Rd., Macomb Township, has several locations throughout the U.S., but only one in Michigan. The menu features classic, signature and premium salads, as well as the option to create your own. Spicy Veggie, Greekalicious, Chipotle BBQ Chicken and Ginger Glazed Salmon are a few popular choices.

If you’re extra hungry, add a Napa Valley Veggie or Spicy Southwestern Panini to your salad. You can even place your order right at your desk, so there’s really no excuse to break your diet at work.

Stay strong, healthy eaters! With all these tasty choices in the neighborhood, there’s no reason to go back to your fried-chicken-eating, beer-guzzling ways.
