Discover new horizons with the confidence of the Chevy Silverado, from busy streets to scenic views.
We’re in the habit of exploring a new Detroit neighborhood each month here at “in the D,” and so far we’ve investigated Corktown and Greektown. Now, we’re venturing to Mexicantown in southwest Detroit.
While you may be familiar, here are a few “can’t miss” places when it comes to the area:
Restaurants
Famous for its grilled chicken, this family restaurant also offers Barbecue Ribs, Shrimp Quesadilla and Ceviche Tostada. Located two blocks from Clark Park, you can dine-in or carry out seven days a week. Cash only!

Enjoy lunch or dinner at this Mexican steakhouse. Classic entrees include Enchiladas Rojas, Chile Relleno and Flautas. Try one of many steaks, including Ranchero New York Steak. Tacos are available a la carte for lunch, including Shrimp Diabla tacos and lobster tacos.
Additional restaurants in Mexicantown worth checking out: Los Altos, Taqueria Mi Pueblo, El Barzon and The Huron Room.
Bakeries/Cafes
While in southwest Detroit, be sure your sweet tooth leads you to this bakery, which boasts a variety of breads and specialty cakes, cupcakes, flan, Mexican pastries and more. “Like” the Facebook page for frequent updates of what you’ll find available in the store.
Just down the street from Mexicantown Bakery, you’ll find an excellent cup of coffee at Café Con Leche. The menu includes other hot drinks, iced beverages and a few food items. Warm up with Mexican Hot Chocolate (with a hint of spice!) or the shop’s signature Café con Leche.
Even more bakeries in southwest Detroit: La Gloria Bakery and Sheila’s Bakery.
Play
Located across the road from Café Con Leche is Clark Park, where you’ll find programs for youth, festivals, concerts and special events. Programs this month include open skate, drop-in hockey and arts and crafts classes for children.
Don’t miss out on the Clark Park Winter Carnival on Saturday, Feb. 27 from noon to 4 p.m., followed by the Hockey Classic at 6:30 p.m. Both are free and great for families! Events include ice skating, outdoor games, marshmallow roasting, face painting and more.
Also see: The Matrix Theatre Company, an educational theater company with a play beginning its run next Friday, Feb. 26.
Enjoy exploring Mexicantown, and stay tuned for our next adventure in March. Any guesses where we’ll be heading?
