As many people are spending the new year looking forward and planning their goals for the year, health consciousness is often high on their list. If you’re not planning on cutting drinks out completely from your diet, hard seltzer water, A.K.A. spiked sparkling water, is a tasty, low-carb, low-sugar alternative to craft beers and wine.
The popular beverage made waves in 2019 as the unofficial drink of the year and breweries are not slowing their roll on this one. That includes many Michigan-favorite brewers, like Atwater, Griffin Claw and Short’s. So, the next time you’re at the bar or grabbing something from the store, look for these Michigan-made hard seltzers.
Available in cans year-round or at any of Atwater’s three locations, this hard seltzer is available in three flavors: mango, cherry and lime. At 100 calories, this 5% ABV beverage contains zero grams of fat, one gram of sugar and is gluten-free.
From the makers of Norm’s Raggedy Ass IPA, Birmingham-based Griffin Claw currently has two flavors of their hard seltzer on tap at their brewery: cranberry and black cherry. However, they also can their seltzer, so you should be able to find it in stores around Metro Detroit.

From Comstock Park-based Perrin Brewing Company comes Clear Coast, 5% ABV hard seltzer that is available in six different flavors. With flavors like mango guava, mixed berry and watermelon lime, and weighing in at just three grams of carbs and one gram of sugar, this 100-calorie seltzer is a tasty beverage you can enjoy all year.
Made with real fruit juice, Beaches Hard Seltzer from Short’s Brewing Company comes in two varieties: the unflavored “Pure” version and a tropically-flavored one made with mango. Both are free of sugar and contain fewer than 100 calories.
Sixth Street Seltzer from City Built Brewing is made with Michigan beet sugar and is only available at their brewery in Grand Rapids. Clocking in at 6% ABV, this seltzer is served clear and unflavored, with the option to have it flavored with seasonally-rotating syrups.
Similar to City Built’s Sixth Street Seltzer, Two Guys’ Brian Seltzer is only available at their brewery in Wyoming, Michigan. However, this seltzer has the highest ABV on this list at 7%. The base drink is unflavored, but flavored syrups can be added at your request.
You’ll find Ore Dock’s Breakwater Seltzer at their brewery in Marquette, as well as bars around the state and, with limited availability, in cans. Available in flavors like black cherry and lemon lime, Ore Dock has marketed this seltzer as “Superior Sourced” due to the water used in the brew coming from Lake Superior.
