It’s pretty appealing to stay snuggled up under a blanket at home instead of braving the harsh winter weather to find out what’s new around town. Now that spring is just around the corner (March 20!), you’ll have no excuse not to try any one of these fabulous restaurants that opened during your winter slumber.

Fine dining restaurant BESA is located on Woodward Avenue in Detroit and is the brainchild of chef Kyle Schutte, sommelier John Cooke, managing partner Gerti Begaj and Mario Camaj. The menu includes a raw bar, accentuated starters and articulately prepared entrees, such as Pacific black cod, Hudson Valley duck, sea scallops, bavette steak and more.
Fusing Irish, Italian and German cuisine into one menu has proved to be a winning combination at Cork and Gabel in Corktown. That fusion is the result of executive chef Matthew McGrail’s Irish and Italian heritage and owner Joe Mifsud’s veneration of German cuisine. Whenever possible, Cork and Gabel sources its ingredients from local suppliers and growers, such as The Wojcik Farm in Tecumseh and Corridor Sausage Company in Detroit.

Located in the recently-opened Shinola Hotel on Woodward Avenue, San Morello is the luxury hotel’s premier dining location. Serving authentic cuisine inspired by southern Italy, chef Andrew Carmellini’s expertise delivers delicious, wood-fired dishes, such as pizza, swordfish, New York strip, braised lamb and more.
Detroiters seeking authentic New York pizza need to head to Mootz Pizzeria & Bar. The menu comes from six-time World Pizza Games champion Bruno DiFabio. In addition to mouth-watering slices, diners can expect salads, starters, beer, wine and cocktails. On Friday and Saturday nights, you can grab late-night slices from Mootz’s next-door pizza counter, Side Hustle.

Fort Street Galley is a food hall in Detroit that houses four chefs, all creating their specialties for a room that seats up to 200 guests. The four restaurants are Allenby (a sandwich shop), Isla (a Filipino restaurant), Lucky’s Noble BBQ and Pursue (a Korean sushi restaurant). Craft cocktails, wine and beer will also be available from mixologist Marlowe Johnson.
Having opened at the very end of last year, Katsu Detroit is the next “Katsu” location from Roy Chen and Katsu Yama, who own several izakayas (Japanese pub) in Asia with the Katsu name. Expect a full bar with sake, shochu and more. The menu consists of chicken, fish, tamagoyaki (Japanese rolled egg omelet), udon, champon and more.
