While a certain fast food joint may have coined a certain term for that meal that comes after dinner but before breakfast, it’s not the only establishment catering to the hunger pangs of you night owls. In fact, there are a few Detroit-area restaurants that know what the late-night crowd craves after a night out with friends.
Known for making delicious food truck-style tacos, Downtown Ferndale’s Imperial has had a late-night menu that impresses just as well as its daytime menu. What’s more apropos than nachos at a Mexican food restaurant? That’s where “Hot Mess” comes in: stewed beans, chorizo, carne asada, jalapeno onion relish, tomato, chipotle nacho cheese, cilantro and queso fresco. For those with simpler pleasures in mind (yes, even simpler than nachos), Imperial brings out the fryer for “You Had Me at Balls:” gouda, chipotle aioli and poblano lime cream.
The newest kid on the block on this list, Katoi has its own history in the city of Detroit, starting as a food truck before upgrading its cozy digs into a full on restaurant in March. Calling it the “Bar/Late Night” menu, Katoi offers seven new options exclusive to the hours of 11 p.m. through 1 a.m., Thursday-Saturday. The standout dishes are the Thai Fried Chicken Sandwich and the Th’oney. The latter should appeal to all Detroiters as the Th’oney is described as a “Thai-style Coney” and consists of chiang mai sausage, nam phrik ong, mustard aioli, shallots, pickled mustard greens, and cilantro.
Located in the Chinatown neighborhood of Detroit, The Peterboro gets its name from its location at 420 Peterboro St. While The Peterboro carries an eclectic menu for its regular hours that sports a variety of American/Chinese dishes like “Mom’s Roast Pork” and “Almond Boneless Chicken,” their late-night menu is simple, consisting of only three items: Cheeseburger Spring Rolls, Crispy Chicken Wings, Szechuan Wonton.
