I cannot say that I have been to every professional baseball stadium in America, let alone on Opening Day; however, I truly believe that no other city celebrates the occasion quite like Detroit! The atmosphere is electric, everywhere you go is packed with Tigers fans and the excitement for the baseball season is unprecedented!

While Detroit’s beloved baseball team technically kicked off the regular season yesterday, the partying truly begins this Friday, April 8. For the 2016 Home Opener, The Tigers host the Yankees. Downtown Detroit will be busy and it will be a good time!

Here are a few gatherings celebrating the beginning of the 2016 season on Friday:

Town Pump Tavern Home Opening Day Party

Once again the Town Pump Tavern will be celebrating in style! The inside/outside party begins at 8 a.m. and goes until 2 p.m., with DJ Zig Zag and DJ Ric-Nasty spinning the tunes. There will also be a full-bar, a heated tent, barbecue, and big TVs.

Donuts and coffee will be provided until 9 a.m. and the band RockStar performs prior to the first pitch. Anne Carlini takes over the broadcast at 10 a.m. and patrons not attending the game can watch it on the giant HD screen at the Fillmore.

Detroit Home Opener Festival

The Madison Ave. Festival Grounds will once again celebrate Opening Day with a huge event. The indoor/outdoor party features giant heated tents, live entertainment from bands and DJs, a food truck rally, games and more! If that isn’t enough, there will be multiple stages, a ton of TVs and full-bars as well. Tickets can be bought online.

Other hotspots include the 97.1 The Ticket Opening Day Block Party (Grand Circus Park), Elwood Bar, and the Detroit Party Bus Opening Day Bash (leaves from Royal Oak or Novi).

Quick Tips:

  • Eastern Market is always a great place to tailgate. Woodward Avenue is full of lots as well.
  • Know what you’re getting yourself into. It will be packed and many roads will be under   construction or closed. Make sure to check out MDOT or ClickOn for traffic updates before you head out. Woodward is under heavy construction.
  • Dress for the weather. The temperatures are likely going to differ between 7 a.m. and first pitch, so If you’re planning to be in Detroit all-day long, dress accordingly.

The 2016 baseball season is just about here. Make sure to celebrate it Detroit style. Go Tigers!
