It’s a good thing Paczki Day only rolls around once a year, because you basically have to spend the next 364 days working off the zillions of calories packed in those delicious, deep-fried donuts. Good thing they’re worth it, right?

Everyone knows you can find a paczki at your local bakery on February 12, but that’s not all that’s going on in Metro Detroit on Fat Tuesday.

A paczki eating contest might be more your style. If that’s the case, you’re in luck! P.L.A.V. POST #10, 11824 Jos Campau, Hamtramck, will open its doors at 10 a.m., followed by a paczki-eating contest at noon. Afterwards, there will be bands playing and a DJ spinning all day, so you’ll have an opportunity to dance off whatever you consume.

Known as home of the paczki bomb, Small’s, 10339 Conant, Hamtramck, will host a daylong Fat Tuesday extravaganza. The festivities begin at 10 a.m. and paczki bombs (injected with booze) will be available until they run out.  Pabst Blue Ribbon specialties include 20 oz. cans for $4 and 16 oz. drafts for $3. You’ll be able to catch half a dozen sets by live bands, including a Tenacious D tribute band.

For those of you paczki lovers with dietary restrictions, Celiac Specialties, with locations in Farmington Hills and Rochester Hills, prepares gluten-free paczki. You won’t have to choose from boring flavors, either. Options include custard chocolate covered, chocolate butter cream, raspberry powdered, and more.

The adventurous palate might enjoy a unique paczki instead of the traditional ones filled with custard, lemon or raspberry. New Palace Bakery, 9833 Joseph Campau St., Hamtramck, has countless specialty paczki, including Presidential Choice (cherry filled, topped with milk chocolate) and Pink Ribbon (pink butter cream filled with pink ribbon candy topping). They also have 2-fillings-in-1 and 3-fillings-in-1, like the United Paczki (strawberry, custard and blueberry) and Hamtramck Boat (banana custard, strawberry, and pineapple covered with milk chocolate).

However you choose to enjoy your Fat Tuesday, just remember—you’re allowed a few extra (thousand) calories for the day. Happy Paczki Day!
