Now midway through May, it’s time to get serious about summer weather and what that means for good food and, more importantly, good beer. Michigan’s winters may be cold, but its summer temperatures swing equally in the other direction on the thermostat, making for picture-perfect relaxation. It’s hard to beat a warm, summer day in Michigan, sitting outside, sipping on cold craft beer. That’s why we’ve decided to roundup some of our favorite breweries and taprooms with outdoor patios in southeast Michigan.
Jolly Pumpkin
Jolly Pumpkin comes from the mind of production manager Ron Jeffries. While there are three Jolly Pumpkin locations in Michigan (four if you count the Null Taphouse in Dexter), it is the Detroit location, with patio seating, we are focused on today. In addition to outdoor seating where you can soak up some rays while having your taste buds assaulted by JP’s craft beers, the Detroit location is also a pizzeria with fantastic artisanal pies.
Draught Horse Brewery
Located in Lyon Township, Draught Horse Brewery is a quaint brewery just off Grand River Avenue, west of New Hudson Drive. With 11 taps carrying six “core beers” and six rotating brews, Draught Horse is a hometown destination for craft beer in the Lyon Township area. In the warmer months, patio seating at the front of the brewery makes this a perfect spot for a little summer relaxation.
The Royal Oak Brewery
Established in 1995, The Royal Oak Brewery is Oakland County’s oldest brewpub. With a trip to The Royal Oak Brewery, not only can you treat yourself to a selection of 7-9 freshly brewed beers on tap, but a food menu with Southern staples, like Louisiana Jambalaya, Shepherd’s Pie, blackened catfish and more. Michigan may not be known for scorchers like the South is, but that shouldn’t stop you from enjoying a day on the patio with a fresh brew and whatever your appetite desires.
Brown Iron Brewhouse
Named Best Beer Bar by Craftbeer.com the last two years, Brown Iron Brewhouse in Washington, MI is home to 64 beers on tap from brewer’s across the Great Lake State and the nation. While you scour the beer list for the one brew you can’t live without, enjoy some sunshine on one of the most beautifully lit patios you’ll see at a brewery.
Batch Brewing Company
Found in Corktown, Batch Brewing Company has a rotating selection of 15 beers on tap brewed on-site. Opting for long communal tables, Batch Brewing Company hopes to bring about a sense of community in its establishment. That design choice extends to the outdoor patio, also featuring long communal tables. Plus, every month, Batch Brewing Company teams up with a local nonprofit to raise funds through a select beer on tap.
