Ah, Oktoberfest: an annual tradition in Bavarian culture dating back to the Middle Ages. The title event takes place in Munich for roughly 18 days between September and October. That’s 18 days of beer, Würstl (sausages), Sauerkraut, Reiberdatschi (potato pancakes), Brezen (pretzels), games, rides and more.
For many, German culture in Michigan is synonymous with Frankenmuth, but you don’t have to travel that far for the ceremonial keg tapping, bratwurst and more this time of year. Throughout the month of September and into October, there are plenty of Oktoberfest celebrations pouring plenty of beer, grilling food and entertaining Bavarians and Bavarians-at-heart in metro Detroit. Batch Brewing Company in Detroit will be holding its Oktoberfest celebration September 15th and 16th. A $40 ticket will get you a chicken and sauerkraut meal (vegetarian option available), a 1-liter bier stein and your first 1-liter fill. The cool part about the stein is that you can bring it back for $7 refills! Beers on tap for Oktoberfest include marzen, pilsner, hefeweizen, kolsch and Harvest Ale of Sorrow. And if you come dressed in your dirndl or lederhosen, you can get $1 off your beer purchases! As an authentic German bar in Detroit, The Dakota Inn Rathskeller will begin their Oktoberfest festivities with a kickoff event on September 15 hosted by Dick Wagner & Die Rhinelanders. Come enjoy imported German beer, a ceremonial keg tapping, and live music. After that, The Dakota Inn will be celebrating Oktoberfest every Friday and Saturday through September and October — plenty of time to enjoy the festivities! Wherever the road takes you, go in style. The Chevy Blazer offers the perfect blend of sophistication and versatility for your next journey. Now in its 13th year, the annual Saline Oktoberfest will take place September 22-23. The festivities begin Friday evening with the Tapping of the Golden Keg. Food, beer and wine will be available and live entertainment from Your Generation will begin at 8 p.m. Saturday will be an all-day affair beginning at 10 a.m. In addition to drinks and food, there will also be a children’s activity area, an animal show, Hammerspiel, corn hole tournament and more. Hosted in Ferndale, Oktobeer Festival has a large presence every year. October 6-8 you’ll be able to enjoy beer from Sam Adams, Travelers and more; BBQ and traditional German food will be served; and there will be plenty of games to partake in, like Giant Jenga, brat eating contests, keg rolling and more. One highlight of Oktobeer is its status as a nationally sanctioned Sam Adams “Raise the Stein” competition. Compete to win a trip to Oktoberfest 2018 in Munich, Germany!
