Macaroni and cheese is a universally loved dish, whether you adore the blue box variety or prefer it served at a restaurant and mixed with lobster. While there’s nothing wrong with still adoring the mac of your youth, your taste buds deserve a treat every once in a while, no?
Those boxed varieties in your cupboard certainly don’t come with lobster, chicken or pulled pork in them. The following restaurants in Metro Detroit serve up some serious mac with killer add-ins. Let’s take a look!
Zeke’s Rock and Roll BBQ, 240 W. 9 Mile Rd., Ferndale, may be known for its barbecue, but what I keep going back for is the mac. While the Chili Mac is self explanatory, the Loaded Mac N Cheese is another option on the menu. It’s topped with your choice of pulled pork or veggies, or you can upgrade to any other meat for an additional $2. Smoked chicken mac, anyone?
If you like spicy, the Roasted Jalapeno Mac N Cheese may be for you.

Red Rock Downtown BBQ, 207 W. Michigan Ave., Ypsilanti, is known for its barbecue and beer, but the macaroni and cheese is not to be outdone.
Here, you can order one of three varieties on the menu, including Red Rock Mac & Cheese (three cheese Alfredo blend with pulled pork). Your other option is BYO mac, where you get to build your own delicious bowl. The base is cavatappi pasta with three cheese Alfredo, to which you can add anything from Parmesan cheese to smoked bacon to tomatoes to beef brisket.
Sweet Lorraine’s Fabulous Mac n’ Cheez!, with locations in Detroit, Auburn Hills and Troy, is any macaroni and cheese lovers dream establishment. Chef Lorraine spent years researching and perfecting her mac and cheese recipe, so no matter which one you choose off of the menu, it will be a winner.
There are over a dozen different topped and mixed mac options on the menu, including Cajun Shrimp (with shrimp, bell peppers, onions, Pepper Jack cheese and Cajun spices) and Truffle & Mushroom Mac (with mushrooms, truffled bread crumbs and Swiss cheese). I would highly recommend checking out the Green Mean Pesto Mac, too.
