Some days you need to slow down, sit in a breezy spot and while away the night. Few things complete the scene like a frozen margarita – a drink that is easy to make and unequivocally refreshing.

What is a frozen margarita? It is an icy version of the original drink, which is considered a simple one to master once you know the proportions. Most recipes include ice blended with your favorite tequila, two parts triple sec and one part freshly squeezed lime juice.

Adding fruit or other similar ingredients is one way to make this already sweet drink even sweeter. Use frozen fruit to avoid adding too much water to the drink. That can make the taste less potent and enjoyable, according to mixologists.

Strawberry is a major fan-favorite favorite along with other fruit such as mango, mixed berries and pineapple. Metro Detroit bars and restaurants sometimes get more experimental, such as Lumen’s Hibiscus Margarita. You also can add salt to the rim just like a regular margarita on the rocks.

Such a slushy, alcohol-forward drink is great to enjoy responsibly and with friends and family when appropriate.

Mi Pueblo

This Mexican restaurant is slightly out of the way from Southwest Detroit’s well-known Mexicantown. Yet it is well known for its bountiful bowls of chips and salsa, great dishes and huge portions of frozen margarita. The staff is super friendly and welcomes larger groups.

The Skip

Head down to the Belt and the Skip for your favorite frozen drink but be prepared for a taste sensation. The Skip’s favorite frozen margarita is based on cucumbers for a smooth, fresh finish. The drink includes El Jimador Blanco, Pierre Ferrand Dry Curacao, cucumber, lime and orange. You also can get a carry-out version of the drink.

Lumen

Detroit’s favorite restaurant inside Beacon Park is known for its great bar area, and many people recommend its unusual but highly delicious Hibiscus margarita. This refreshing frozen drink tastes like a summertime dream with Libelula Tequila, pama, Cointreau, agave and hibiscus.

El Charro

Most people know this restaurant chain as the home of the puffy taco, but it has so much more, including great frozen margaritas. You can get them in traditional flavors, fruit flavors and with premium alcohols. If you’re eating at home, you can take your cocktails to-go including its signature margaritas and Sangria available at the Fraser, Macomb & Troy locations.

Los Galanes

Detroiters have frequented this Bagley Street restaurant for generations. Its friendly atmosphere and great outdoor areas make for an ideal setting to enjoy a frozen margarita while dining in comfort. This is a great spot for bringing groups of friends together thanks to its open seating areas.

Remember to drink responsibly and plan ahead with a designated driver or take advantage of one of these local designated driving services.
