What makes a good sandwich? Is it the bread? The meat? The cheese? The condiments? No, a sandwich is greater than the sum of its parts. For centuries, we have found new and inventive ways to make our favorite foods portable, but none match the quality of a good sandwich. Lucky for metro Detroiters, there’s no shortage of places to grab a sub any day of the week. In fact, 2017 has brought us four new sandwich shops, all of which are worthy of your taste buds.

M.C. ‘Wiches

With its original location in Oxford, M.C. ‘Wiches has recently opened up a second spot in Ferndale! If you’re familiar with the Oxford spot, you can expect the same great sandwiches, like the Steak House (marinated steak, portabellas, caramelized onions, swiss cheese and ‘wich  sauce) or Porky’s Revenge (house smoked pork, slaw and Michigan apple BBQ sauce). If you think you’ve seen it all, you might want to take a gander at the “Secret Menu.” But, let’s not forget the delicious sides. I’m partial to the mac & cheese with bread crumbs baked on top. Mmmmm…

La Pecora Nera

Detroit’s newest Italian deli counter and sandwich shop, La Pecora Nera, opened its doors in March and has been slinging delicious sandwiches since. With 12 sandwiches on the menu and plenty of salads, coffee, tea and gelato (yes, gelato!), you have an ample selection to choose from. And, if you can’t wait to bring home fresh deli cuts to your friends and family, La Pecora Nera doubles as a grocer.

Pranzo Sub Bar

What’s that? Two new sub shops in Ferndale? That’s right. In addition to the aforementioned M.C. ‘Wiches, Pranzo Sub Bar also recently opened up on 9 Mile Rd. Here you’ll find hot, cold and flatbread sandwiches packed with delicious toppings. If you’ve got a crowd to feed, ask them about their party size subs.

This is how you Traverse Michigan. With cutting edge technology, tons of cargo space, and advanced safety features, Chevy Traverse is your key to unlocking the mitten state.

Avalon Cafe and Bakery

Detroiters are familiar with Avalon International Breads and Ann Arborites have been privy to Avalon Cafe and Kitchen, but Detroiters now have access to Avalon Cafe and Bakery in downtown Detroit on Woodward. Aimed at the tireless crowd of downtown workers, Avalon Cafe and Bakery has a selection of sandwiches for breakfast and lunch. Enjoy a frittata sandwich in the morning and a trout reuben sandwich at midday. While you’re there, pick up a loaf or two of Avalon’s renowned, freshly baked bread.
