Around this time every April, music fans are treated to a special event. Record Store Day is set to take place this coming Saturday! The nationwide event was conceived in 2007 and pays homage to the more than 1,000 independent record stores in the United States. Record Store Day provides exclusive releases, limited releases and “first” releases (meaning it is the first time the album is made available to the public) from artists.

The day is a celebration of both music and culture, and the vinyl records and CDs released on RSD show appreciation to music fans of all genres. Luckily, there are several independent record stores in the Metro Detroit area ready to celebrate such an event.

Detroit Threads in Hamtramck looks to celebrate Record Store Day in style!  In what has become somewhat of a tradition, the Detroit Techno Militia visits the record/clothing store for the event. There will be disc jockeys all day long, from noon until close, and the entire event will be broadcasted on Burst Radio. The event is family friendly, so bring the kids. Plus, snacks will be provided!

Not to be outdone, Melodies & Memories of Eastpointe has local artist Kenny Tudrick performing at 1 p.m. He will be joined by Pete Ballard from Bulldog. Record Store Day at the shop begins at 9 a.m., with hundreds of new vinyl releases. There will be giveaways and specials, such as 20 percent off of all used vinyl.

How do you make a truck your own? We're redefining what it means to drive a pickup. With luxurious comfort, a world-class entertainment system, and a 6-position Multi-Flex Tailgate, Silverado is the change you've been waiting for.

Dearborn Music and Stormy Records of Dearborn are both set to participate. Dearborn Music has been around since 1956 and will have some exclusive releases for the occasion. Also, look for the store to discount both new and used records. Stormy Records will bring a handful of the new records into the store, but will also display a wide collection of old, used and rare records.

If you happen to be in the Royal Oak area, be sure to check out UHF Music or Solo Records. Both stores are ready to party! In addition to a plethora of new releases, UHF will have live music with the Moonwalks, Danny Kroha and The Muggs. Patrons will get a chance to spin a roulette wheel for prizes such as concert tickets, records and more with the purchase of any Third Man Records release. You can find more details here.

Solo Records opens early at 9:30 a.m. for the festivities. It will bring in several new releases. Solo will also give away three record players! Customers can enter their names for the raffle when they arrive. While you’re in the area, you may want to take a short cruise down Woodward Avenue and check out the Found Sound on 9 Mile Road in Ferndale.

Paramita Sound in Detroit is looking to have a good time as well. The store will feature several RSD titles, bring in DJs to spin music and will have beer available! Keep up with the store’s Facebook page for more details.

Clawson’s Flipside Records is another RSD participant, and will start the festivities at 10 a.m. The store will bring in several of the exclusive releases, offer 20 percent off of music, video games, movies and more! There will be live music provided by Charming Relative, Remnose and 1592. Plus, free candy and pop. A disclaimer, though: the store will not be buying or trading during the RSD event.

In addition to all of this madness, all HopCat locations will give a free order of crack fries to guests who show a receipt of a Record Store Day purchase (Saturday only). You can look at a complete list of participating stores in Michigan here. The forecast looks perfect and it is shaping up to be a great Record Store Day!
