The great thing about seafood is that it’s so varied that you’re likely to find something you’ll enjoy. Maybe you prefer bite-size rolls of sushi or a nice salmon dinner. But, if you’re a fan of whitefish, Michigan is a good place to be.
Rich in omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins B-6 and B-12, whitefish feature prominently in restaurants across Michigan due to the fact that they can be found in all of The Great Lakes. This means they are not only a healthy option but are often prepared fresh and brought in from local suppliers.
So, from broiled fish dinners to shareable patés, here’s where to enjoy a delicious and healthy whitefish meal in Metro Detroit.
Joe Muer Seafood
A staple seafood restaurant in Detroit and Bloomfield Hills, Joe Muer Seafood features a wide-ranging menu with everything from lobster and oysters to a specific catch, like rainbow trout and Atlantic monkfish. When it comes to whitefish, the chefs at Joe Muer prepare a broiled Lake Superior whitefish that is served with fresh lemon and your choice of creamed spinach or stewed tomatoes.
Hazel, Ravines & Downtown
As one of the ten best new restaurants last year, Hazel, Ravines & Downtown is a hotspot for dining in Birmingham. Having just brought back their annual lobster event, “Lobster Pound,” Hazels has a great selection of “additionals” to round out your dinner, including whitefish paté served with a sleeve of saltine crackers. Just spread the paté on a cracker and enjoy the rush of whitefish flavor paired with the saltiness of a cracker.
Tom’s Oyster Bar
Contrary to its name, Tom’s Oyster Bar in downtown Royal Oak features a lot more than just oysters. From sushi to pan seared salmon, there’s something for everyone here. Yes, that includes the non-fish-loving folks in your party as they also feature plenty of salads and sandwiches on the menu. Whitefish fans should try the broiled whitefish served with roasted redskin potatoes and a seasonal vegetable.
Black Pearl
Like Hazel’s, Black Pearl in Ann Arbor features a great whitefish appetizer to share with friends and family. The whitefish dip is made from steamed whitefish, shallots, capers, micro arugula and served with wonton chips. It’s a perfect start to a seafood meal with entrees, like caramel apple salmon and Bayou pasta. Finish things off with desserts, like a flourless chocolate cake and carrot cake tres leches.
