It seems that everywhere you turn in southeast Michigan, there’s a new restaurant, bar, brewery or business opening up on any given day of the week. That’s certainly nothing to complain about! It means the economy and local entrepreneurs are succeeding, which are two things I think we can all support.
While we recently published an article covering Metro D’s newest and coming soon restaurants, it’s never too soon to talk about more! Plus, this time around I’ll be throwing in some establishments of the non-restaurant variety, such as breweries and even an aquarium. Get ready to add these businesses to your “In the D” bucket list!
Craft Breww City, 27843 Orchard Lake Rd., Farmington Hills, is now open after holding its soft opening this past weekend. The brewery and gastropub has over 40 different beers to choose from, and the beer menu includes drafts from Michigan favorites like Short’s, Bell’s, Founders and more.
Certainly your beer would be lonely if you don’t accompany it with some grub. Try the Texas Toast Grilled Cheese (with American and three cheese blend and truffle oil, served with tomato soup), Chili Burger (topped with roasted hatch green chili and Cheddar cheese served on a pretzel bun) or Fish Taco Platter (with walleye, spicy marinade and Mexican slaw).

Kuzzo’s Chicken & Waffles, 19345 Livernois Ave., Detroit, debuted after much anticipation with a soft opening just yesterday. The menu includes waffle combos, southern comforts, and plenty of options besides just chicken and waffles, such as breakfast combos, omelets, sandwiches, salads, finger foods and more.
It would be foolish to not try the Big Red (a red velvet waffle served with your choice of three wings or tenders, a side dish and bourbon maple syrup), Ellie May (a piece of fried chicken with grits, two eggs with home-style potatoes and toast) or The Avenue of Fashion (an omelet with spinach, mushrooms, onions, Jack cheese and tomatoes).
Sea Life Michigan Aquarium, 4316 Baldwin Rd., Auburn Hills, has been mentioned briefly on “In the D” before, but when a new aquarium is opening up in the area, you make mention of it as many times as possible!
The grand opening takes place tomorrow, Thursday, Jan. 29, and would be the perfect weekend activity for anyone looking for something fun to do on an otherwise boring Saturday afternoon (hint hint). Who wouldn’t want to spend the day with over 5,000 different sea creatures?
Canton Brew Works, 8521 N. Lilley Rd., Canton, anticipated an earlier opening, but good things take time, my friends! And if there’s one thing I’ll wait patiently for, it’s certainly beer. According to the CBW Facebook page, the new projected opening date is mid to late February, so let’s hope we’re all bellying up to the (newly constructed) bar with frosty mugs in our hands by the beginning of March at the very latest.
While you wait for the taproom to open, sign up for the mug club!
Sister Pie, 8066 Kercheval St., Detroit is in the process of getting its storefront location ready, but needs your help. While the pie company has two pending small business loans and a Hatch Detroit grant (worth $50,000) covered, there’s still a portion it needs help with in order to open its doors by April.
What can you do to help? Well, give as much (or as little) as you can to Sister Pie’s Indiegogo campaign before it ends on Saturday, Feb. 7. Don’t miss out on the 24 Hour Dancebreak-a-thon Fundraiser at the Paramita Sound the same day!
Oh, and also in the meantime, grab a Salted Maple Pie at the Parker Street Market to show your support.
Detroit Bubble Tea, 22821 Woodward Ave., Ferndale, is another “coming soon” business that has seemingly been in progress for an eon, but the delays will be worthwhile! I mean, who wouldn’t eagerly anticipate the opening of the establishment that was voted “Best Sweet Treat” and “Best Drink” at Royal Oak’s Arts, Beats and Eats last year?
The most recent projected opening date is the beginning of February, so cross your fingers that you will be sipping a single bubble tea beverage through two straws with your sweetheart by Valentine’s Day!
If you need even more grand openings to anticipate to get you through these cold days, keep in mind that everyone’s favorite Thai eatery on wheels, Katoi, is saying goodbye to the food truck and looking for a permanent storefront location. If you could go for some good barbecue, keep your eyes peeled for more on Zeke’s Rock and Roll BBQ, 240 W. 9 Mile Rd., Ferndale, which is holding soft opening events this week. And if that’s still not enough for you, grab a brew at Baffin Brewing Company, 25113 Jefferson Ave., St. Clair Shores, and BYOF (bring your own food).
Enjoy exploring these recently opened and coming soon restaurants, breweries and businesses in the D, and check back soon for more! There’s always something new and innovative going on in Metro Detroit.
