New Year, Healthy You: Metro D’s Tastiest Salads

It’s a new year, and chances are you’re using this fresh start as an opportunity to better yourself. If you’re hoping to eat healthier as the year starts, yet still enjoy life’s simple pleasures like going out to eat with your friends, I am here to tell you that you can do both.

Metro Detroit offers plenty of restaurants with tasty salads on their menus, and these are a few standouts:

Sweet Lorraine’s

Try the Chicken Kebabs “Corfu Holiday” salad with roasted red pepper hummus, Greek salad and pita, on the menu at both the Southfield and Livonia locations. If you find yourself at the latter, opt for Lorraine’s special salad with organic greens, Gorgonzola cheese, pears, dried cranberries and hazelnuts.

The Grilled Tenderloin Steak Salad is also a good protein-filled option.

Big Bear Lodge

A restaurant with a warm and cozy atmosphere, there are a variety of healthy salads to choose from. Order the Grilled Salmon Salad (mixed greens tossed with roasted corn and black bean relish, cucumbers and tomatoes) or Mary’s Super Salad (a blend of asparagus, avocados, tomatoes, blueberries, sweet potatoes, candied walnuts, quinoa and goat cheese crumbles tossed with honey lemon mustard vinaigrette).

Since you are trying to stay healthy, steer clear of the Buttermilk Fried Chicken Salad, just this once.

Jim Brady’s Detroit

Having recently opened, you can try out this new Royal Oak eatery and eat healthy all in one. Opt for the Baby Kale with Grilled Salmon salad (with avocado, grapefruit, watermelon radishes, feta cheese, candied walnuts and lemon vinaigrette) or Main Street House Salad (mixed greens topped with dried cherries, strawberries, Gorgonzola, sliced apples, toasted pecans, cinnamon raisin bread croutons and cherry maple vinaigrette).

Anita’s Kitchen

Tabbouleh, Fattoush, Chicken Feta Fattoush and Chick Pea Salad are just a few of the tasty Mediterranean options at this Ferndale restaurant. The Kale Quinoa Salad (tossed with honey vinaigrette, organic quinoa, roasted almonds and dried cherries) can be topped with your choice of chicken or salmon.
