Despite the unusually pleasant temperatures we have enjoyed throughout November and December, the cool winter air often puts us in a mood to consume hearty, savory foods. In terms of comfort food, savory pies seem to be a popular choice around southeast Michigan. If potpies, meat pies or quiche are what you’re looking for, take a look at the list below.

Republic Tavern

This Downtown Detroit tavern has a ton of dinner options on the menu, but its potpies are definitely worth trying. The Chicken Potpie uses whole braised Otto’s Chicken, root vegetables and fried chicken foot. Republic also has had Rabbit Potpie on its menu, if you’re into that kind of thing.

Pronto

Pronto has been serving fresh and locally sourced food to the Royal Oak community since 1991. The Chicken Pot Pie is a classic dish on the menu. The pie includes tender all-white chicken breast, carrots, celery, onions, peas and potatoes all blended together in a chicken veloute with a light pastry crust topping.

McShane’s Irish Pub and Whiskey Bar

McShane’s offers an Irish-American menu with a lot of choices. When speaking of Irish-inspired foods, let us not forget about meat pie. The Shepherd’s Pie includes seasoned ground beef, peas, carrots and onions in a rich brown gravy smothered with a sharp Cheddar Jack cheese blend over smashed red potatoes. Sounds like a must-try item.

O’Mara’s Irish Restaurant

Not to be outshined, O’Mara’s of Berkley also knows a thing or two about Shepherd’s Pie. O’Mara’s does it Irish classic style, with layers of potatoes, carrots, seasoned ground beef, and imported cheeses in a sliced potato crust. You know the establishment makes its Shepherd’s Pie with care, as you can find it under the “Exclusively O’Mara’s” section of the menu.

Afternoon Delight Café

Ann Arbor’s Afternoon Delight seems to be a fan favorite for quiche in the area. The menu is chock-full of breakfast, lunch and brunch items. The Spinach & Mushroom Quiche is made up of small spinach leaves, mushrooms, tomato, black olives, Swiss, Cheddar, ricotta and feta cheeses and sunflower seeds. There is also a Quiche of the Day offered, served with a cup of soup.

Savory, buttery and filling pies are available all over the Metro Detroit area. You now know where to find them. You’re welcome!
