Science museums and centers are great places to explore when the focus knob on your microscope is broken and your space shuttle is “in the shop,” especially for kids and parents. In fact, southeast Michigan has some great science museums for you to explore and we’ve got a list of just a few of them right here!
Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum
Take one look at Ann Arbor Hands-on Museum and it is apparent that it was designed with curious kids in mind. There are tons and tons of things for growing minds to see and do, like climbing in a real ambulance, hearing your heartbeat, viewing the Michigan nature exhibit and learning how a tornado is made. There’s even a pre-school section for kids four and under with all sorts of scientific gizmos to play with.

Michigan Science Center
Formerly the Detroit Science Center, the Michigan Science Center has been around since late 2012 and sports an IMAX Dome Theater, a Planetarium, 250+ hands-on exhibits and more.
One of the highlights of the Center is its live stage shows. With rotating themes, the live stage shows provide an awe-inspiring experience, showing kids and adults what is possible with science. The current live show is Put it to the Test, which examines the relationship between temperature and the movement of atoms and molecules.
Cranbrook Institute
With a long and storied history dating back to 1904, the Cranbrook Institute of Science has become a marquee destination for explorers and curious minds of all kinds. With events for kids, like the Institute’s upcoming summer camp programs, and adults, like CIS After Dark, there’s something to tickle brain’s of all ages.
