Every morning, we get out of bed to prepare for the day. We walk into the bathroom, turn on the shower, wait for the hot water heater to kick in and proceed with our morning routine. For many of us, this is how we start every day, but for others, it’s a far cry from reality.
In a continued effort to give back to our community, your Metro Detroit Chevy Dealers are partnering with Capuchin Soup Kitchen’s Shower Program for Truckloads of Hope, a donation drive to collect toiletries and other household necessities for those less fortunate.
Beginning today and running through Friday, March 3, 2017, you can stop by any participating Metro Detroit Chevy Dealership to drop off toiletries, bath towels, bed sheets and more into the truckbed of the Silverado on display in the showroom. All donated goods will be delivered to Capuchin Soup Kitchen in Detroit on Monday, March 6.
Capuchin Soup Kitchen has been in operation for close to a century and the Shower Program since 2001. Through the Shower Program, guests of the Soup Kitchen receive free access to their shower facilities once per week.
“As guests receive freshly laundered clothing after their showers,” said Br. Jerry Johnson, Capuchin Soup Kitchen director, “typically individuals will leave behind the clothes they ‘came in with.’”
Instead of simply discarding the clothes of the Shower Program’s guests, the guests “give back” to the program by taking the soiled clothing to a laundromat to be laundered. That clean clothing is then redistributed to the Shower Program.
This is the first time MDCD and Capuchin Soup Kitchen have partnered for Truckloads of Hope, but things are already off to a great start.
“Truckloads of Hope provides an easy, but oh so important, way to assist others,” said Br. Jerry Johnson. “Household staples and shower items are often times financially out-of-reach for many of our guests. Truckloads of Hope will be a tremendous boost for our guests.”
Outside of Truckloads of Hope, there are plenty of ways to help Capuchin Soup Kitchen as they are always looking for volunteers that can sort clothes, stock food pantries and serve food. Donations of gently used clothing are also appreciated.
“Our needs are great and we depend on the community to help us with those needs,” said Br. Jerry Johnson. “We are very thankful to everyone who helps us serve.”
