With the first snowfall already behind us, some of us are finding ourselves in the holiday spirit before the arrival of Thanksgiving. That means decorating and getting a head start on holiday shopping!

Festive feelings or not, plenty of Metro Detroiters will be waking up at the crack of dawn (or foregoing sleep all together) later this week in order to snag the best deals of the season on Black Friday. Instead of joining the crowds, let your turkey dinner settle, enjoy some extra family time and set out to get some shopping done on Small Business Saturday instead.

The movement, which takes place on Saturday, Nov. 28, encourages patrons to shop at local, small businesses instead of larger stores you may find at the mall.

This year, the Downtown Detroit Partnership (DDP) is presenting its 12th annual Shop Detroit in partnership with American Express’ Small Business Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. DDP’s Detroit Experience Factory (DXF), Build Institute and Downtown Detroit Business Improvement Zone (BIZ) will provide special Small Business Saturday discounts and giveaways, and free shuttle service throughout Detroit.

The Silverado is the official sponsor of your next home improvement project.

Matt Chung, director of brand strategy of DXF, said that this year’s Small Business Saturday shuttle route is expanded, connecting out to the Livernois Avenue of Fashion.

“We’ll be able to connect with even more small businesses in Detroit,” Chung said.

Shopping locally this season will not only allow you to avoid crowds at the mall, but to find unique gifts from local stores, too.

“Shopping small also creates and supports the local economy,” Chung said. “Often times you get to meet the owner, or a family member of the business will be in the store giving you a chance to hear the story behind their shop.”

DXF is partnering with Challenge Detroit to encourage shoppers to use the hashtag #ShopDetroit throughout the holiday season. Gift certificates and prizes will be awarded to winners who share comments and photos about their local shopping experiences using #ShopDetroit.

Don’t miss out on other opportunities to shop local on Small Business Saturday, including events in surrounding metropolitan areas, such as WyandotteMilfordRochesterNorthville and Dearborn.

Shop small in Metro Detroit, support local businesses and find great gifts this holiday season!
