We have had an uncharacteristically warm December, but going into January, I’m sure things will be different. We can expect the snow to make its presence felt. There is some good that comes with it, though. More snowfall and colder temperatures means more opportunities for winter sports. Those of you who enjoy skiing are most likely in favor of such a change. Listed below are some great places in southeast Michigan to get your ski on.
Alpine Valley
White Lake’s Alpine Valley has 25 picturesque, tree-lined slopes, several chair lifts and four terrain parks. According to its website, Alpine is southeast Michigan’s largest ski area. With Michigan’s unpredictable weather, it is important to know what the snow conditions are, but Alpine makes it easy by providing conditions and availability online.
Huron-Clinton Metroparks
Michigan’s gorgeous metroparks provide the right terrain and scenery for several winter sports. Four of which – Hudson Mills (Dexter), Huron Meadows (Brighton), Indian Springs (White Lake) and Kensington (Milford) – offer cross-country skiing. Equipment is also available to rent if you do not have your own.
Mt. Brighton
Located in Brighton, obviously, Mt. Brighton also monitors the snow conditions online. Mt. Brighton has 25 trails, five ski lifts and 130 acres worth of fun. There are new ski and snowboard programs available for the 2015-2016 season, including Women’s Snowboarding Academy and a new Kids’ Adventure Zone.
Pine Knob
Pine Knob in Clarkston has plenty of chair lifts and three terrain parks: beginner, intermediate and the Big Park. Pine Knob’s hill is 300-vertical-feet and has a total of 17 runs. Both individual and group rates are available for rentals and lift tickets. Pine Knob also has great snowmaking technology. It has more than 100 snowmaking guns and can cover 100 percent of the area!
If you fancy yourself a skier, then you have probably been to some of these aforementioned places, and if you’re looking to try something new, these are all great places to start. Be safe when it comes to your winter sport endeavors and try not to break anything, like I once did.
