After an exciting 2017 season, Detroit City Football Club finally returns in a big way this week with both their annual Soccer Prom and their season opening match against Western Michigan University.
The fourth annual Detroit City FC Soccer Prom will take over Small’s Bar this Wednesday, April 11 for a night full of dancing, partying, and tuxedos (if you feel like it). The free event is a celebration of the upcoming new season along with the official unveiling of the 2018 kits.
“Soccer Prom is an awesome way for the club, supporters and players to share in our anticipation and excitement, and it will be a great build-up to our home opener on Saturday,” Lindsey Pehrson, media director for the club, said. “Everyone looks forward to Soccer Prom for that reason, and it’s also the first chance to see the team’s jerseys for the new season.”
Soccer Prom is a great way to meet-up with other Detroit City FC fans before the club kicks off its 2018 season against Western Michigan University on Saturday, April 14. Keyworth Stadium in Hamtramck will once again be full of the area’s biggest soccer fans, creating one of the most exciting atmospheres in all of sports. The club continues to break attendance records year after year, and they hope to continue that trend with a match against the Kalamazoo school.
With ample space and advanced safety features, the Blazer ensures every journey is as enjoyable as the destination.
Fans are eager for the home opener, but the excitement doesn’t stop there. Detroit City FC will be competing in exciting matches all season long including the 2018 Lamar Hunt U.S. Cup against the Michigan Bucks on Wednesday, May 9 and an international match against FC St. Pauli on Saturday, May 19.
The match against the Michigan Bucks will be the first round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Cup and tickets went on sale this past weekend. This will be the first U.S. Open Cup match at Keyworth Stadium and the club’s fourth overall Lamar Hunt Cup appearance. The Lamar Hunt Cup is celebrating its 105th year and is the U.S. Soccer National Championship where amateur teams have the opportunity to face professional teams in a playoff atmosphere.
“This will be our third time meeting the Bucks in the tournament, and they are one of the most successful PDL teams in history, so it will be a great test for our team,” Pehrson said.
Ten days after their Lamar Hunt Cup match, Detroit City FC will welcome FC St. Pauli from Germany to its first-ever match in the United States. The club has been one of the most popular clubs in Germany since its creation in 1907 and currently plays in the second tier of German soccer. This will also be the first time ever that a Detroit City FC match will be televised on Fox Sports Detroit.
From a Soccer Prom, to the home opener, and all of the exciting matches Detroit City FC has planned, it is a great time to be a soccer fan in Detroit. The club keeps growing in popularity not only in the Detroit community, but around the world.
“The atmosphere and environment have been instrumental to DCFC’s growth. I have a lot of people tell me they didn’t start out as huge soccer fans, but they came to one DCFC game and fell in love with the club, the culture and the sport. It’s hard not to,” Pherson said.
