When it comes to variety in meals, the world is your oyster…or clam…or chicken dumpling…you see where I’m going, right? No? All right. Sometimes, what you make for yourself in the kitchen can get…bland. Take some inspiration from other parts of the world to make things interesting again! From the preparation of fresh seafood to the combination of spices and herbs, there’s a flavorful variety found in recipes from the far east. You could go to your usual, nearby supermarket and find some of what you’re looking for, but if you want authenticity and a plethora of options, you’ll want to keep these four metro Detroit Asian supermarkets on your radar.

168 Asian Mart

As one of the biggest Asian markets around, 168 Asian Mart in Madison Heights is unlikely to disappoint. With so many options and aisles upon aisles of fresh food, this is a good spot to kind of get lost in as you ruminate on all the different Asian dishes you want to prepare. Plus, if you’re in a pinch, 168 Asian Mart has its own food court where you can dine in.

Little Asia Mart

This little market in Detroit is the place to go for products from Sri Lanka. Here you’ll find food like ambul thiyal, goraka paste, dried sprats, thora dry fish and more. One of the more popular Sri Lankan dishes is fish ambul thiyal (sour fish curry). All you need is some firm fish, like tuna, cut into cubes and sauteed in a blend of spices, with dried goraka to give it that sour flavor.

One World Market

If you’re in the market for Japanese food, One World Market in Novi has you covered. Not only will you find plenty of dried noodles, fresh seafood and more, but also some “fun” food, like Japanese candy and sodas. Plus, if you just can’t wait to get home to roll your own sushi, One World Market has its own sushi bar/restaurant inside the store! If you’re not sure what to make, sushi rolls are always fun, especially for first-timers. You’ll need sheets of nori, sushi rice, your choice of seafood cut into strips and your choice of vegetables, like carrots and/or cucumber.
