There was a time when a man wanting to maintain his appearance wasn’t, let’s say, in vogue. Sideways glances from men wanting to distance themselves from those that would — gasp — wax their eyebrows, let alone step foot in an upscale barbershop, were the norm not too long ago.

Today is a different story. Today, a man walking into a barbershop and asking for curls with a fade, the “Don Draper” or the “Macklemore” is just commonplace (side note: do people still get the Macklemore?). Maybe you’re not looking for a haircut at all. There’s a lot to appreciate about a nice shave from a straight razor or a beard trim to keep up appearances in a world where beards might be more common than a clean shave.

Whatever your fancy, there are plenty of great barbershops in metro Detroit that will be happy to fix you up.

Standard Barber Co.

Located at 138 Cadillac Square, Standard Barber Co. opened in early 2014 before renovating the space a year later. The shop is actually on the second floor and features antique chairs and combs floating in blue liquid. All prices vary, but they offer haircuts, beard trims and straight razor shaves.

Social Club Grooming Co.

Founded by Sebastian Jackson at the Wayne State University main campus, The Social Club was created to be a beacon of a community of Detroiters. It’s a hub of conversation where topics, like music, lifestyle, fashion and grooming are passed around regularly. In fact, a forum called “Shop Talk” is held on-site for community members to share ideas and just…talk. (As of August 28, 2017, The Social Club is renovating its shop and can temporarily be found at Detroit Is The New Black on Woodward).

The Barber Pole

If you’re looking for a shop with a lot of history, look no further than The Barber Pole in Birmingham. Establish in 1949, this shop had been through generations of family ownership before it was purchased by resident Barber Pole barber Stephen Trachsel in 2007. They offer haircuts, buzz cuts, beard trims, neck shaves, straight razor shaves and even shoe shining.

Detroit Barbers

As one of the most full-featured barbershops in town, Detroit Barbers is located in Corktown and Ferndale. You can book an appointment online for anything from a classic haircut to whatever special design you might have in mind. There are even waxing and barber facial services. Plus, Detroit Barbers has its own line of hair and beard care products.
