There’s arguably nothing better than free, while going to a concert is arguably one of the most fun ways to spend your night. Combine the two and you have a guaranteed great night out. Earlier this summer we gave you some ideas for the perfect outdoor concert date experience, now we’re giving you even more ideas with these five venues offering free concerts throughout August. No need to thank us (but you’re welcome). Riverside Park in Auburn Hills has been offering up free concerts all summer long on Friday nights and will continue to do so through August 18. That means there’s only three more left with a Marley-ritaville show this Friday, a Merge performance of oldies and today’s top 40 next Friday, and The Classics playing hits ranging from the 1930s through the 1990s on August 18. That’s a wide range of music to enjoy in three weeks, combine that with the price of free, how can you pass it up? Are you looking for a wild concert experience? There’s no wilder place to be than at the Wild Summer Nights at the Detroit Zoo every Wednesday night. Through the end of August, the zoo will play host to Steve King and the Dittlies, Athens Creek, Detroit Symphony Orchestra (for two weeks), and Cosmic Groove. The concerts are free with zoo admission and will start at 6:30 p.m. Shain Park has been home to many free concerts this summer, and there’s still four great shows remaining. This Wednesday will feature two performances with the classic rock-n-rollers The AnTekes at noon and the soulful Sax Maniacs at 7 p.m. Later in the month will include performances from Mainstreet Soul on August 9 and the 50s band The Favorites on August 16. So whether you’re looking for good ol’ fashioned rock-n-roll, some sweet soul music, or music from a bygone era, you should make plans to stop by Shain Park on Wednesday nights this August. For the past three weeks, the Rockin’ the Riverfront summer concert series has electrified downtown Detroit and will continue to do so for another three weeks. Performances from Gin Blossoms, 38 Special, and Everclear will rock the riverfront (as advertised) in the coming weeks. It’s a beautiful venue with a gorgeous view of the Detroit River, and of course, it’s free. Centennial Park has hosted Oxford’s Concerts in the Park all summer long and will feature four more artists every Thursday this August. Country western artists Ruby T & Valentine will perform this Thursday, ragtime musician Boogie Woogie will hit the stage next Thursday, country rocker Tommy Steele on August 17, and pop musician Highway 23 will close things out on August 24.
