There are all kinds of wine to satisfy any palate. There are bold and robust flavors as well as fruity, more crisp flavors. Recently orange wines have been enjoying the spotlight, so why not try one?  When you hear of orange wine, I know you’re thinking, “Hmm, an orange flavored drink”? But, that’s not quite it. Orange wine is made with white grapes and gets its color from the skin and seeds of the grape, which contain lignin. The process consists of at least four days of fermentation, as well as whole grapes which go through the maceration phase, similar to the process for red wine. The cool thing about the process is it is all natural. There are no additives and yeast is not usually used in this process.

Orange wine is generally dry but carries tropical undertones similar to those of  jackfruit. There are also bold nutty flavors such as hazelnut and Brazilian nuts. Since this wine is on the dryer side there are a few light fruit undertones that pop up such as bruised apple. Additional notes include wood varnish, linseed oil, juniper, sourdough, and dried orange rind.

Where can you taste such a wine? Glad you asked! There are local wine stores that sell a variety of orange wine and even have monthly wine tastings. Make your way to any of these three locations in the Metro Detroit area.
