Detroit has world-class theaters and opera houses that showcase some of the best touring productions in the country. If you’re lucky enough to have a ticket to one of these shows, you might be wondering where to go to eat beforehand or how to make your night whole. So we’ve come up with some suggestions of places you should eat beforehand to get in the right mood before the production.
Kinky Boots (11/3-11/5): Pop-Up Restaurants
The Tony Award-winning production of “Kinky Boots” will be playing at the Fox Theatre starting on Friday, November 3. With music from Grammy Award-winner Cyndi Lauper, “Kinky Boots” is a musical all about reinventing yourself and thinking outside the (shoe)box. Pop-up restaurants have the same inspired spontaneity shown in the play, and Detroit has plenty of great pop-up restaurants. Detroit City Distillery and El Club both have pop-up restaurants regularly so be sure to check their sites to see what’s happening before heading down to the “Kinky Boots” show.
The Color Purple (11/7-11/12): Savannah Blue
“The Color Purple,” the inspirational production based off the book by Alice Walker, will play at the Fisher Theater from Tuesday, November 7 through Sunday, November 12. To get ready for the powerful southern drama, try some southern style dishes at Savannah Blue. Between Clifford Street and Grand River Avenue off of Times Square, the menu includes fried chicken, seared salmon, and braised oxtail. Visiting Savannah Blue will help prepare you for your visit to Georgia in “The Color Purple.” The holiday classic “The Nutcracker” will be playing at the Detroit Opera House for one weekend starting on Saturday, November 25. BalletMet Columbus’ original take on the production of “The Nutcracker” is truly spectacular, and to make your night whole is to take a trip around the culinary world. The second act of “The Nutcracker” features many different countries and you can experience these countries at La Feria and The Peterboro. La Feria is a lively Spanish restaurant with some of the best tapas (small plates) around, while The Peterboro has a modern Chinese menu along with some of the area’s best craft beers. So before “The Nutcracker” takes you around the world, head to either La Feria or The Peterboro to get ready for the trip. A production of “An American In Paris” will play at the Detroit Opera House on November 28 through December 10. The critically acclaimed musical is based on the Academy Award-winning classic film and features, well, an American who finds himself in Paris. To get you in the French mood, we recommend the Antietam in downtown Detroit. With a delicious French dinner menu, a wide-ranging brunch menu, and great cocktails, you’ll be in the right frame of mind to enjoy “An American In Paris.”
