Ah, tater tots. The great American side dish, appetizer or, let’s face it, anytime meal. By themselves, tater tots are a delicious, crisp alternative to the more popular, but inferior french fries. But, why stop at just tater tots? It’s time to load those babies up!
That’s where these great Detroit area bars and restaurants come in. Each of these fine establishments have tater tots that will make you wonder how you could have wasted so many delicious moments snacking on something other than the tots. Oh, and question the meaning of life.
Having opened on December 13, 2014 at the corner of Woodward Avenue and Canfield Street in Detroit, HopCat Detroit is the place to go not just for a selection of over 130 craft beers on tap, but also some seriously addicting tater tots. Let’s be honest; they’re not called Super Mega Crack Tots for nothing. The name comes from HopCat’s signature cracked black pepper seasoning, which is sprinkled on top of the tots. Served with a side of heated cheese sauce, these tots are the perfect complement to your choice of craft beer.
Located on Michigan Avenue in Detroit, Mercury Burger Bar kicks up the tater tot game five notches with five different kinds of tater tots, like plain tater tots, poutine tots and chili cheese tots, all of which come as a side for $4 or a shareable appetizer for $6.

If you’re feeling a little more adventurous on your tater tot journey, try the Tater Tachos with cheese sauce, crumbled bacon, jalapeños, salsa, cilantro and sour cream, or the Buffalo Tots, which are tossed in Frank’s Hot Sauce, topped with crumbled bleu cheese, and served with carrots, celery sticks and bleu cheese dressing.
With several locations sprinkled throughout the metro Detroit area, when it comes to tots, Old Detroit Burger Bar does it Detroit-style with the Old Detroit Tatortizer. Topped with bacon and cheese sauce, the Old Detroit Tatortizer is a simple, yet totful (see what I did there?) tater tot dish that is the perfect warmup for one of Old Detroit Burger Bar’s signature Detroit and Michigan-style entrees.
