Since its first race in 1978, The Detroit Free Press Marathon has been a staple in the area. The race brings in runners from all over the world, whether they are accomplished marathoners or just the occasional runner. The inclusion amongst runners, the distinct feature of being the only official underwater international mile, and being the first race to offer an international marathon are just a few of the things that have drawn people to participate during its 40 year existence.

While celebrating its 40th anniversary, the marathon will also be celebrating the rich history of the automotive industry. Chevrolet in particular has been a building block in both the city of Detroit and the auto industry in general. 64 years ago Chevy introduced the Corvette to the world. In keeping with the theme of racing, speed and endurance, this year’s medal, awarded to all finishers of the race, will feature an original model, 1978 Corvette.

Last year’s race saw over 26,000 registered runners, walkers, wheelers, and handcyclists participate, and this year’s race is expected to be even bigger. Events will begin on Friday, October 13, with the full marathon beginning on Sunday, October 15.

Your Metro Detroit Chevy Dealers will be helping make this year’s festivities even more memorable as the host of the Health and Fitness Expo on Friday, October 13 and Saturday, October 14 at COBO Center. The event will feature health exhibitors from all over the area along with official 2017 marathon merchandise, footwear, apparel, nutrition, and much more.
