The holidays are now over, but that doesn’t mean the season of giving should end. In fact, given the new year, why not make a resolution to give back more often in 2018? Metro Detroit is filled with fantastic nonprofit organizations that provide aid to various communities. From gloves for the homeless to wigs for children, here are five local nonprofit organizations to consider donating your time, money and more to in 2018.

Mittens for Detroit

Founded in 2010 by Detroit 187 actress Erin Cummings, Mittens for Detroit is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides new mittens and gloves to people in need in Detroit and other underserved cities. Each collection season runs from October 1st through January 31st. Simply make a monetary donation and Mittens for Detroit will use that money to buy new mittens and gloves from Michigan-based Broner Hat and Glove for the agencies found on their “partners” page. The current collection season ends in a few weeks!

Affirmations

The Ferndale-based Affirmations is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that seeks to provide a space for people of all sexual orientations, gender identities & expressions and cultures. Affirmations provides tons of programs and services for people of varying ages, backgrounds, orientations, interests and more. To help Affirmations, you can look into becoming a volunteer here or make donations through various methods found here.

Detroit Dog Rescue

As Detroit’s only no-kill animal shelter, Detroit Dog Rescue’s mission is to help solve the problem of an overabundance of homeless dogs in Detroit. 90% of dogs picked up by the City of Detroit Animal Control Officers are euthanized. Detroit Dog Rescue wants to fight that statistic. To help them, consider becoming a volunteer or making a tax-deductible donation.

Forgotten Harvest

Formed in 1990, Forgotten Harvest’s mission is two-fold: prevent hunger and food waste in Detroit. Working with 800 food donors, Forgotten Harvest provides food to emergency food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless and domestic shelters, senior centers, children’s homes and group homes. The food they donate comes from donations of food that would otherwise go to waste. To help Forgotten Harvest, considering becoming a volunteer or making a donation.

Wigs 4 Kids

This 501(c)(3) nonprofit provides support to children and young adults experiencing hair loss for a variety of reasons, such as cancer, alopecia, trichotillomania and burns. Wig recipients range in age from 3 to 18. All wigs are custom-fitted and styled to the child’s requests. The most obvious way to help Wigs 4 Kids is to make a hair donation of your own. If your hair doesn’t meet the minimum hair length (and other requirements), consider these other ways you can help.
