It has been said that the secret to happiness doesn’t lie within oneself, but lies in the happiness of others. Sometimes, as humans do, we become so caught up in what is happening in our own lives, we forget to consider the lives of those around us. Why not put those moments of clarity to use by offering your time and resources to those in need? From playing bingo to catching a screening of the latest blockbuster, there are plenty of ways to give back to metro Detroit.

Cat Bingo at Catfe Lounge

Ferndale’s premiere cat cafe is hosting a pair of bingo nights (April 14 & 28) to support the Catfe Lounge animal shelter. The proceeds from a $25 ticket goes directly to the shelter. Snacks will be provided and cat-themed prizes will be awarded to bingo winners. Catfe asks that you bring your own beverage. They’ll provide the cats.

Happy Hour for Hope

Benefiting New Day Foundation for Families, which works to provide financial and emotional support to families facing cancer, Happy Hour for Hope is happening Thursday, April 19 from 5-8 p.m. at Rochester Mills Beer Co. Enjoy hors d’oeuvres, an open bar and live music from local musician Ken McCauley. This happy hour event will kick-off the annual Hope-a-Thon fundraising drive (April 19 – May 4), during which time donations to New Day will be matched by New Day donors (up to $100,000).

The Famous Door: A Classic Club + Soul Event

Named after a shuttered downtown Detroit nightclub that catered to African-American LGBT people, The Famous Door is a celebration of LGBT liberation by calling back to the club scene and culture of the late ‘70s and early ‘80s. On Saturday, April 21, DJ John Jammin Collins and DJ Tone will be serving up a dose of nostalgia and good memories through throwback music. This fundraising event supports LGBT Detroit and will be hosted by The Famous Door house DJ, Melvin Hill.

Avengers: Infinity War Fundraiser Benefiting Rock CF Foundation

Benefiting Rock CF Foundation, this is your chance to watch the latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe while supporting a good, local nonprofit organization. A $22 ticket to this screening on Saturday, April 28 includes popcorn, soda, giveaways, and a raffle ticket. Rock CF Foundation has been working since 2007 to find a cure to cystic fibrosis and through their Kicks Back program (in partnership with Run Detroit) has provided running shoes and coaching tips to more than 300 people with cystic fibrosis. Diagnosed with cystic fibrosis herself, Rock CF director and founder Emily Schaller credits running and life-saving medicine with her overall good health.
