Those of us that have been known to have a drink or two on occasion will know the struggle of going on a diet and having to give up some of our favorite vices. When weight loss is the goal, knowing how many calories are in one mojito or mai tai is the buzzkill to end all buzzkills. But, just because you’re being conscious of what and how much you’re consuming doesn’t mean you need to give these things up entirely. Believe it or not, not all cocktails are created equal; enjoying a refreshing drink doesn’t mean ruining your diet. Just check out some of these cocktails crafted by your local artisans in Detroit.

Two James Distillery

For many, grabbing drinks in Corktown means stopping by Two James Distillery. The care and attention put into their drink program results in some delicious cocktails that are decadent without being too heavy. If gin is your drink of choice, the “Jitterbug Perfume” (Two James’ Old Cockney Gin, beet & carrot shrub, fresh lime juice  and fresh ginger) is what you’ll want to try. On the bourbon side, “Disco In the D” uses medjool date and raisin infused Grass Widow Bourbon, agave simple syrup, lemon and house bitters. Both drinks use a combination of fresh ingredients and liquor to produce a cocktail worthy of your conscious mind.

GreenSpace Cafe

The Greenhouse

The Greenhouse from GreenSpace Cafe.

With a section of the menu dubbed “Conscious Cocktails,” it’s no surprise that GreenSpace  Cafe is a great place to imbibe consciously. “The Greenhouse” is a mixture of gin, apple-kale-lemon-celery-cucumber-ginger juice, elderflower, orange and prosecco. With so many fruits and vegetables, this is a drink that will leave you feeling refreshed, not drowsy.

La Dulce

Located in downtown Detroit’s Crowne Plaza, La Dulce is a restuarant with an exceptional menu matched by an exceptional cocktail program. In that cocktail program are two drinks that won’t ruin your diet. The first is a gin & tonic drink called, for obvious reasons, “Prickly Pear” (St. George Terroir gin, prickly pear, lemongrass and Thai basil). The second is a spritz called “Mermaid” and it includes Reya vodka, St. Germaine and grapefruit. Simple and clean.

Centaur

Centaur bar in Detroit is a mainstay for great drinks at great prices. So, if you’re watching your waistline and your wallet, stop in from 4-7 p.m. any day for happy hour. Of note on the menu are Centaur’s martinis. The pear martini is a mix of pear vodka, pear liquor and a hint of almond that will leave you feeling refreshed. If that’s not enough, during happy hour, all martinis are $5. Save money and calories.
