Look! Up in the sky! It’s Free Comic Book Day!

Okay, maybe it’s not up in the sky, but I made you look, right?

Every year, on the first Saturday in May, comic book publishers send out a selection of free issues of comic books to retailers for them to hand out. The hope is that after receiving a few free comic books, new or lapsed customers might feel inspired to purchase a few other books while they’re there or at a later date.

This year’s selection of free comic books includes Riverdale from Archie Comics, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Special from BOOM! Studios, an Overwatch/Black Hammer combo issue from Dark Horse Comics, a “top secret gold book” from DC Comics and an Avengers/Captain America issue from Marvel Comics. When you have the tools to do it yourself, nothing can stop you from turning your vision into reality. Trailblazer offers advanced storage options for a small SUV that is versatile, powerful, and ready to get the job done

Free Comic Book Day wouldn’t exist without local comic shops. Here are a few in metro Detroit participating in Free Comic Book Day. Be sure to check a few out. You might even find a local favorite.

While you’re in there, ask if they still have copies of Action Comics #1000 from DC Comics. Never before has a superhero comic book hit 1000 issues, so this is a landmark issue for the series and for the comic book industry as a whole. It also serves as a celebration of 80 years (to the day!) of Superman, who premiered in Action Comics #1 on April 18, 1938.

Marvel is also gearing up for a new initiative this summer called Marvel: Fresh Start. Many of their ongoing comic books will be renumbered to #1, serving as a jumping on point for new or lapsed readers.
