Look! Up in the sky! It’s Free Comic Book Day!

Okay, maybe it’s not up in the sky, but I made you look, right?

Every year, on the first Saturday in May, comic book publishers send out a selection of free issues of comic books to retailers for them to hand out. The hope is that after receiving a few free comic books, new or lapsed customers might feel inspired to purchase a few other books while they’re there or at a later date.

This year’s selection of free comic books includes Riverdale from Archie Comics, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Special from BOOM! Studios, an Overwatch/Black Hammer combo issue from Dark Horse Comics, a “top secret gold book” from DC Comics and an Avengers/Captain America issue from Marvel Comics. How do you make a truck your own? We're redefining what it means to drive a pickup. With luxurious comfort, a world-class entertainment system, and a 6-position Multi-Flex Tailgate, Silverado is the change you've been waiting for.

Free Comic Book Day wouldn’t exist without local comic shops. Here are a few in metro Detroit participating in Free Comic Book Day. Be sure to check a few out. You might even find a local favorite.

While you’re in there, ask if they still have copies of Action Comics #1000 from DC Comics. Never before has a superhero comic book hit 1000 issues, so this is a landmark issue for the series and for the comic book industry as a whole. It also serves as a celebration of 80 years (to the day!) of Superman, who premiered in Action Comics #1 on April 18, 1938.

Marvel is also gearing up for a new initiative this summer called Marvel: Fresh Start. Many of their ongoing comic books will be renumbered to #1, serving as a jumping on point for new or lapsed readers.
