The city of Detroit has endured for over 300 years, which means there’s a lot of deep history in many of its areas. You might be curious on how your ancestors lived generations ago or how certain areas developed. Whether you grew up in the motor city, or you are new to the area, there are some great tour companies in the D that will take you back in time through the history of the city (no DeLorean needed).

City Tour Detroit

Formerly known as Hometown History Tours, City Tour Detroit offers several different ways of seeing the motor city. The Solid Gold Tour shows you where the best Motown music was actually produced, whereas the Incredible Journey to Midnight tour tells the stories of the Underground Railroad.The company also offers a fun haunted tour where you can learn stories about Greektown or Midtown and see a ghost or two along the way!

Detroit Historical Society

The Detroit Historical Society offers in depth tours of Detroit’s most popular buildings and landmarks. The historians give guests exclusive behind the scenes access to many of metro Detroit’s most historic locations such as the Detroit Boat Club, the Foundation Hotel, the Detroit Opera House, and the David Whitney Building. Many of the tours sell out quickly, so be sure to reserve your spots as soon as possible!

Detroit Tour Connections

Whether you’re looking for bus tours for large groups or small private tours, Detroit Tour Connections has you covered. Bus tours include themes such as “Historic Churches” and “Auto History,” while private tours include a “U Drive Tour” option where the tour guide is in your backseat while you drive.
