Metro Detroit Chevy Dealers and Detroit Free Press have teamed up for the Top 10 Takeover, a series of restaurant takeovers that will highlight the ten best new restaurants in Detroit and the surrounding area. Last time, we looked at Kuzzo’s Chicken & Waffles. Next, the Takeover heads to Birmingham to check out Forest, the Detroit Free Press/Metro Detroit Chevy Dealers Readers’ Choice Best New Restaurant, on Aug. 9.
Forest, which is located in the same Birmingham location where Forest Grill closed its doors last year, is an elegant space owned by Samy Eid of Phoenicia fame with a kitchen lead by executive chef Nick Janutol. Take a look at Janutol’s resume and you’ll see notable past experiences at places such as Eleven Madison Park in New York and L20 in Chicago. Recently, in a list of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants, Eleven Madison Park was ranked fifth; the first four restaurants are located outside of the U.S.
“My favorite thing about Forest is how it somehow balances along this delicate line that separates fine dining from neighborhood fare,” says Detroit Free Press restaurant critic Mark Kurlyandchik. “The technique-driven food is certainly worthy of the white tablecloths it’s served on, but the service is unfussy yet professional.”
Tickets to the Forest Takeover, which cost $78, are on sale right now. Ticket prices include taxes, gratuity and a donation to Forgotten Harvest. On Aug. 9, ticket holders will be treated to a five-course dinner. A full breakdown of each course can be found below:

To those that don’t make it to the Takeover, but still want to give the Birmingham restaurant a try, Kurlyandchik recommends the duck breast entrée.
“Here the duck is dry-aged for almost a month and then cased in honey, coriander and other spices that create a thick crust of fragrant skin,” says Kurlyandchik. “It’s one of my favorite duck dishes of all time.”
As with all of the Top 10 Takeovers, Metro Detroit Chevy Dealers is giving away three pairs of tickets to the Takeover of Forest to three lucky winners. The contest is currently underway and ends Aug. 4. Click here to enter!
