Metro Detroit Chevy Dealers and Detroit Free Press have teamed up for the Top 10 Takeover, a series of restaurant takeovers that will highlight the ten best new restaurants in Detroit and the surrounding area. Last time, we looked at Standby. Next, the Takeover heads to Detroit to check out Vertical on September 20.

Vertical is a wine bar, restaurant and retail store in downtown Detroit, located in the lobby of the Ashley apartments in the Paradise Valley neighborhood. The wine restaurant is headed up by father-daughter duo James and Remy Lutfy, who also own Fine Wine Source in Livonia. With more than 250 bottled wines and 50 served by the glass, Vertical caters to wine drinkers and oenophiles, but not exclusively. The menu is also decorated with small plates, mixed drinks and draft beer, and any of these options are sure to delight.

“I love the atmosphere of the space,” said Detroit Free Press restaurant critic Mark Kurlyandchik. “It feels warm and cozy even in the middle of winter – the kind of place you can see yourself sharing laughs with friends at the table, losing track of how much wine you drank, all while enjoying delicious, wine-friendly plates.”

Attendees of the Takeover of Vertical on September 20 will enjoy a five-course meal and have the opportunity to speak with Detroit Free Press restaurant critic Mark Kurlyandchik about Vertical and each of the courses.

Make every outing a tail-wagging adventure with the Chevy Silverado, offering you the perfect blend of comfort and capability.

  • First Course: Burrata – heirloom tomatoes/tamarind/Thai herb “Cavier”

  • Second Course: Smoked Salmon – grapefruit/nori brown butter skordalia/chartreuse air

  • Third Course: Pork Belly – coconut parsnip puree/5 spiced mango miso reduction

  • Fourth Course: Sirloin – Bonito Panisse/micro arugula/truffle soy syrup

  • Fifth Course: Green Tea Clafoutis – cherry/vanilla bacon brittle

Even if you’re not a budding oenophile, Vertical might be the spark that lights your path to a new hobby.

“I took a few friends who weren’t big wine drinkers to Vertical once and by the end of the night they were converts,” said Kurlyandchik. “So, yes, I would still recommend it, but primarily as a gateway to hooking them on the many virtues of wine-drinking.”
