Vegan Has Never Been Tastier

Eating vegan is something people might do for personal, ethical, or health reasons. But one thing that is shared by all people who choose to eat vegan, is done the hope that they can find fresh, delicious food to eat at home as well as when they go out to dinner.

Metro Detroit has a large number of restaurants offering more vegetarian and vegan options than ever before. These offerings are a blend of food that is good for you–think fruits and vegetables–as well as savory treats and desserts. All in all, you can satiate most cravings, even for Coney Island fare, somewhere in the Motor City.

Not only are these dishes well-made and full of flavor and texture, but served with care. Chefs who specialize in vegan also want their customers to enjoy the presentation and visual aspects of what they eat, so you can expect some colorful and well-plated dishes no matter where you and your crew go to eat in the area.

As always, be sure to check with the waitstaff to see exactly how a dish is made if you have specific dietary concerns or questions. Many restaurants will label a dish as vegan or vegetarian, but it ultimately is up to you to make sure you know what you’re eating.

Blazer bookstore

With a spacious interior, cutting-edge technology, and top-tier safety features, the Blazer is built for those who live life to the fullest.

Here are a few restaurants that have some of the most exciting vegan dishes available in Metro Detroit.

Ale Mary’s

This Royal Oak restaurant has built up a reputation for having a sizable number of vegetarian and vegan options on its menu from drinks to dishes. Whether you’re in the mood for a Smart dog with “impossible” meat chili or Nashville hot (vegan) chicken with sweet and spicy McClure’s pickle chips, you’ll find a vegan option to love. Try the Impossible Chorizo Tacos for a spicy bite; the dish features corn tortillas, purple cabbage slaw, avocado citrus dressing, Spanish rice and avocado for richness.

EastEats

This outdoor dining venue immediately took off when it opened during the pandemic for its cozy igloos, but also for its innovative menus. There’s a rotating list of items you can check out when you set up your reservation in advance. But what makes this place great for vegans is its Gee Vee Food Co. popups on Wednesdays and other dishes that suit this life and style.

Berkley Common

There are many items on this innovative menu for vegetarians and vegans to indulge in. Try the VBLT, which features mixed greens, a portobello mushroom, vegan aioli and avocado smash. There’s also the cauliflower steak, which is made with roasted cauliflower, spiced cauliflower puree, mushroom demi and crispy brussels sprouts.

Pop Culture Vegan Café

This 100% vegan café located on the East side of Detroit has a wide fan base for good reason: Its food is not only delicious but visually stunning. Since we eat with our eyes first, that makes a difference for some vegans when they’re ready to dive into a new dish. Check out the vegan chicken panini with vegan chicken, vegan mozzarella cheese, onions, tomatoes, spinach, avocado and hummus.
Chili Mustard Onions: Also known to locals as CMO, this vegan coney island-style restaurant is great when you have a craving for Detroit favorites like smothered burgers or vegan hot dogs. Plus, it is a well-known fact that CMO also serves crispy fries like no other, so you have to check them out for that alone. For a taste treat, try the O.M.F.G Sandwich, which features a Quorn Chik’un cutlet, in-house-made organic breading, and lettuce, tomato, and mayo on a fresh hoagie roll.
