As Detroiters, we know that the coney dog is a staple and forever will be. But, as delicious as a good coney dog is, sometimes you want to mix it up a little bit. From vegan to bacon-wrapped, these coney dogs put an interesting twist on a classic Detroit recipe.

“Chino Sonoran” @ Imperial

While not a “coney” in name, Imperial’s “Chino Sonoran” is close to the original with one key modifier that can be summarized in three words: bacon-wrapped hot dog. That’s right. This hot dog is wrapped snugly in a layer of bacon and topped with chorizo chili, chipotle mustard, white onion and cilantro.

Vegan Coneys @ Chili Mustard Onions

The last time we checked in with Chili Mustard Onions, they were still waiting to open their doors. As of August 1, 2018, Chili Mustard Onions is officially open for business! Now, you can enjoy CMO’s signature vegan coney dog, made with 10 different spices and a soy crumble, Monday through Saturday.

“Coney Taco” @ Mark’s Midtown Coney Island

Located in Ann Arbor and Saline, Mark’s Midtown serves up a “Coney Taco” that is equal parts coney and taco. Ground beef, chili, lettuce, tomato, cheese and taco sauce on a steamed hot dog bun or pita make this a coney worth checking off the bucket list.
