When you think of summertime food, a few things probably come to mind. Burgers, steak, hot dogs. There are countless events that cater to the meat-eating crowd, especially during the summer when everything is some kind of a “cook out.” But what about those of us following a vegetarian or vegan diet? As it turns out, summer is also a great time to be a vegetarian or vegan in metro Detroit; just look at these food events coming up in August! Rebecca LaMalfa has a long resume of stints at Michelin Star rated restaurants, participating in season 12 of Top Chef, being the executive sous chef at Trenchermen in Chicago and more. Now, she’s serving up a five-course vegetarian dinner at Revolver in Hamtramck. The first of three nights happened last Friday. Night two (8/4) is already sold out, but you can still get your hands on tickets for Saturday, August 5 at 6 and 9 p.m. Enjoy chilled corn soup, potato gnocchi, charred eggplant and more. Held at the Washtenaw County Fairgrounds in Ann Arbor, the Great Lakes VegBash celebrates vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free cuisine with food from 15 restaurants, caterers and food trucks. Delicious food aside, you can look forward to three stages of music from the 70s through today, a live DJ and children’s activities. The VegMichigan Summer Festival is an annual event that celebrates the health, environmental and ethical benefits of a vegan diet. At the August 6 festival, you can enjoy food from The Nosh Pit Food Truck, Urge Juice, The Gluten Free Bar, Detroit Gourmet Nut Company, Teta Foods and many more. Live music will be provided by Once United and Hines Drive Band. Kids can take advantage of free carnival games, face painting, henna tattoos and the chance to meet a rescued greyhound.
