If you’re a whiskey fan and a craft cocktail connoisseur, chances are you’re familiar with the southeast Michigan duo that make up Bailout Productions, Travis Fourmont and Joe Robinson.
The two have already put on not one but two ragingly successful Whiskey Rebellion events, and on Monday, May 11, they are back for the third edition. Whiskey Rebellion III will be held at Chartreuse Kitchen & Cocktails, 15 E. Kirby St., Detroit, and will also serve as a sneak peak to the highly anticipated restaurant before its doors even open for business.
“It’s always been the goal to showcase our product while shining the spotlight on a new space. We’re good friends with (owner) Sandy and everyone from the Oakland and wanted to give them a proper welcome to Detroit,” Fourmont said. “Chartreuse is the largest venue we’ve done a Whiskey Rebellion in, and the last two showed that we needed it.”
The first Whiskey Rebellion was held at Detroit’s Green Dot Stables, while the second took place at the old Oslo building on Woodward. By using a new restaurant space this time around, in addition to previewing the new Chartreuse space, cocktail lovers will also get a taste of what’s to come out of the kitchen. In fact, Whiskey Rebellion typically takes place in January, but the Bailout duo held off this year’s event in order for it to coincide with Chartreuse’s opening (which is slated for this month).
With ample space and advanced safety features, the Blazer ensures every journey is as enjoyable as the destination.
While all things Chartreuse are being eagerly awaited, what are really important here are the cocktails. Fourmont and Robinson work tirelessly to get top-notch cocktails in your hand as quickly as possible, and they do it ahead of time so you don’t have to waste a moment standing in line waiting for a drink.
“We’ll have four on tap, one barrel aged, and a select few made to order,” Fourmont said. “The idea is (to) showcase high level craft cocktails in a fun, approachable way. We’ll have something for everybody, and hope to convert as many non-whiskey drinkers as we can. Beer will be from Griffin Claw along with some rare (and) old beers stashed for the beer geeks upon request.”
For those who have attended either or both Whiskey Rebellions in the past, don’t be fooled—the third will not only be held at a different space, but the cocktails themselves are entirely different, too.
“You might see a familiar favorite, but we have fun introducing new and interesting flavors to the glass. For those who have never been, it’s all about whiskey,” Fourmont said, noting that cocktails will be served straight, on the rocks or mixed in a cocktail.
The evening’s music will be provided by local band Shine on Kentucky Moon, and for a mere $5 cover charge, you’ll get to enjoy light snacks prepared by chef Douglas Hewitt Jr. of Chartreuse Kitchen & Cocktails. What could be better? Oh, right, the addition of those craft cocktails.
The city of Detroit is still experiencing an explosion in the craft cocktail scene, and according to Fourmont, the people are to thank.
“Detroit, like most growing markets, is becoming more and more progressive. As a result, the culture becomes more educated and demands a better product,” Fourmont said. “With food, it is farm-to-table. With alcoholic products, it’s craft beer, craft spirits and eclectic wine. With cocktails, it’s all of the above!”
Don’t miss out on Whiskey Rebellion III, which starts at 6 p.m. and goes into the wee hours of the night (until 2 a.m.). The event is sponsored by Old Forester Bourbon and Wild Turkey Rye.
“I’ve said it time and time again, it is truly the bartenders, service industry professionals and enthusiasts that make Detroit the best bar city… Our hospitality industry shows no sign of slowing down and we are just happy to be a part of it,” Fourmont said.
