For any classic car fan, the Woodward Dream Cruise is simply a dream come true. It’s a Michigan summer tradition unlike any other, as over a million people will hit the 16 mile stretch of Woodward to see all sorts of classic and muscle cars.
The official Cruise day is August 20, but there are plenty of other festivities throughout the week leading up to the event. From drive-in movie nights, to 5K run/walk events, and even a drag race, there will be lots of exciting events taking place. Here are some of the highlights:
In the heart of Ferndale on Vester Street, the city will be hosting a drive-in movie night on August 19 with a special screening of the Disney/Pixar movie Cars. The event is scheduled to begin at dusk or whenever it is dark enough for the movie to be shown.
You’ll be able to see thousands of different classic cars during the Cruise on Saturday, but the Vintage Emergency Vehicle Show will showcase historic police, fire, emergency, and military vehicles. The show starts at 9 Mile and Woodward at 1 p.m. and will lead up to the Lights and Sirens Parade at 5:30 p.m.
For the fifth straight year, there will be a Cruise in Shoes 5K Fun Run/Walk on August 20 at 7:30 a.m. You can register for the event here or on the day of the event at Royal Oak Shrine High School.
While you’re out looking at all of the classic cars on Cruise day, make sure to stop by the Family Fun Zone at Pioneer Park in Royal Oak from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. There will be face painting, inflatables, kids coloring, live music, a photo booth, a Petting Farm, and more for the entire family to enjoy.
You can legally drag race on Woodward. Seriously. The event will be held on August 19 at the M1 Concourse and will feature thrill rides in Dodges, food, music, and a car show of over a thousand cars.
There are plenty of cars and events to check out at this year’s Woodward Dream Cruise, but with an expected 1.5 million people attending, make sure you plan accordingly and check out the official website.
