Brunch is the new lunch, or is it the new breakfast? In any case, going out for brunch has become somewhat of a trendy thing to do these days. Whether you’re enjoying a perfect three-egg omelette or chomping down on a savory sandwich, brunch is the culmination of everyone’s favorite afternoon bites. While this mealtime mash-up is commonplace, we thought we’d take a look at a few places that are reinvigorating the tried-and-true favorite meal of the day. Without further ado, here are five places in metro Detroit to plan your next brunch outing.
GreenSpace Cafe
Founded by cardiologist and author Dr. Joel Kahn, GreenSpace Cafe was created to champion the belief that “food is medicine.” Using only plant-based products, this eatery is a vegetarian/vegan’s dream. Brunch is served Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. We recommend starting with the chia pudding or fruit plate and moving on to one of the delicious brunch entrees, like the fingerling potato hash or the country biscuits and gravy.
Bobcat Bonnie’s
Located in Corktown, Bobcat Bonnie’s has a prolific brunch menu complete with bloody marys, mimosas and the aptly named 20-oz “Man-Mosa.” With so many delicious options, it’s tough to pick one, but a couple that have jumped out at us are the Nutella Cakes (Nutella-stuffed pancakes topped with bananas, strawberries and even more Nutella), the salmon sandwich (smoked salmon, Crème Fraîche, chive and tarragon scrambled eggs on a toasted English muffin) and Full House fans would be remiss if we didn’t mention the “Uncle Jesse” (house potatoes, onions, ham, bacon, sausage, cheddar cheese and two fried eggs).
Laika Dog
You can find Laika Dog nested inside music venue UFO Factory in Detroit across from “the ghost of Tiger Stadium.” Laika Dog has a brunch menu served on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. There are plenty of ways to truly customize your own omelette, tofu scramble or hash browns, but the most interesting thing you might find on this brunch menu is the waffle dog: two hot dogs (your choice of classic beef or vegan frankfurter) with a waffle for a bun!
Cafe Zola
What’s a good brunch without a crepe or two? Cafe Zola in Ann Arbor makes its crepes with two kinds of flour: “freshly ground buckwheat flour complements our savory crêpes, while pastry flour is perfect in our dessert crêpes.” On the savory side of the crepe menu, you’ll find things like smoked salmon crepes, and one the sweet side, we suggest trying the Normandie (sautéed apples, walnuts & cranberries, drizzled with honey & crème chantilly and finished with a dusting of powdered sugar). Rochester Brunch House
Do we really need to tell you that Rochester Brunch House is a great place for brunch? Do we? Really? Okay. I have two words for you, then: Dutch puff. Your choice of fresh fruit served with lemon, sauteed apples or peaches & whipped cream. This is one menu item that is hard to come by, but you’ll be so glad you did.
