Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Metro Detroit

Attention Metro Detroiters! October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and there are countless local events and charities through which you can help support the cause.

Check out the list below for opportunities to support breast cancer awareness in your area, whether you’d like to walk, shop or simply make a donation:

2012 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer: On Saturday, October 13, the American Cancer Society will host a charity walk in Downtown Detroit beginning at 9 a.m. Walks will also be held in Oakland, Howell and Macomb on the same day.

Gilda’s Family Walk: On Saturday, October 13, join Gilda’s Club of Metro Detroit for a family-friendly fundraising event featuring a walk, health vendors, free food and live entertainment. Register online prior to the event ($10 for children, $25 for adults), and walk the event in Southfield from 8 a.m. to noon.

Ride for Breast Cancer Awareness: On Saturday, October 13, join Macomb Bike & Fitness’ 7th Annual Ride to raise awareness for breast cancer. Sign up for a 10, 25 or 35-mile route and your $25 registration fee will be donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. The ride in Warren features prizes, sweepstakes, goodie bags, refreshments and support for those fighting breast cancer.

Fit for the Cure: Throughout the month, Wacoal will host Fit for the Cure events at local department stores where women can receive a proper bra fitting. For every participant, Wacoal will donate $2 to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. They’ll be at each of the following stores from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.: Parisian in Laurel Park Place on Wednesday, October 17, Parisian in Rochester Hills on Thursday, October 18 and Von Maur in Laurel Park Place on Wednesday, October 24.

Caring for Yourself—Support for Your Journey: On Thursday, October 18, St. Joseph Mercy Oakland will hold an educational presentation on breast cancer from 6 to 9 p.m. Healthcare experts will speak on topics including nutrition, surgical decision, support services and genetics.

BlackFinn & Bras for a Cause: On Friday, October 19, Gilda’s Club will host a happy hour fundraiser at BlackFinn American Saloon in Royal Oak. The event, which starts at 7 p.m. and requires a $10 registration fee, features drink specials and complimentary appetizers. All proceeds go to Bras for a Cause and help maintain Gilda’s Club, a local support program for individuals living with cancer.

Marmalade Hills and The Pink Fund: The Bloomfield Hills skin care company has partnered with The Pink Fund, supporting patients and families affected by breast cancer. Through the end of the year, Marmalade Hills will donate 15 percent of all proceeds from its Pink Grapefruit line to the organization. Products include face wash, body lotion, sugar body scrub and more.

You can also plan ahead and register online for the 22nd Annual Komen Detroit Race for the Cure, scheduled to take place on Saturday, May 18, 2013. You’ve got over six months to prepare for the event, so start creating or managing a team today!
