Dogs are life’s faithful companions, following their owners through good times and bad. Because they’re so loyal, it only makes sense to take them along on a few more good times, such as local favorite pup-friendly social hours like Drinking with Dogs.

Every late summer and early fall when it is possible, Detroit’s premier dog daycare and boarding facility Canine to Five asks people to gather monthly. The goal is to create a special event where the humans enjoy adult beverages and the dogs get water, companionship and fun frolics with their fellow four-legged pooches.

“Dogs are social beings too, and many of them have missed being around their friends just like we have,” said Liz Blondy, owner of Canine to Five

“At our daycare facility, we see that a lot of the dogs have best friends. They hang out together whenever they can, and it’s just heartwarming to see them chilling on the patio with their besties too,” Blondy said. “The Drinking with Dogs events are always a joy to see the dogs and their humans hanging out together.”

From transporting food and goods to having enough room for pets and family, owning the right SUV is essential for pet owners. See the available features that make the Chevy Tahoe a pet lover's dream.

With locations in Midtown Detroit and Ferndale, Canine to Five has been a Metro Detroit staple for dog daycare, boarding and grooming facilities since 2005. Canine to Five has been a bright light in Detroit’s culture and, through its commitment to dogs and their owners, promotes the health and well-being of both.

This year, its beloved Drinking with Dogs events returned in July after a year’s pause due to the coronavirus pandemic and related COVID-19 restrictions. A well-mannered and socially distanced crowd met at The Skip bar in Detroit’s Belt Alley to celebrate being out as well as how much our pets have comforted their people over the past 18 months.

The upcoming Canine to Five’s Drinking with Dogs 2021 is Tuesday, October 26 at The Congregation, 9321 Rosa Parks Blvd. This event will include the popular Halloween costume contest with prizes for individual and group costumes.

“It’s been a long year and more being isolated from friends and family, but our dogs have really eased that burden,” Blondy said. “Our dogs have really helped us de-stress and reminded us that there is space for joy and play in the world. And now that we’re able to gather together with our friends again, Canine to Five wants to bring all our pups together for a celebration of summer.”

Each event takes place from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on a monthly basis. No pre-registration is required, but seats do often fill up quickly. The events are all outdoors, subject to weather restrictions. All dogs must be well-behaved, up-to-date on vaccinations, and remain on a leash for the entire event.

“It’s so nice to be able to get out and get social with our dogs again. After the long winter and the whole long year of 2020, having the pack walks start up again and bringing back Drinking with Dogs just really feels like we’re getting back to where we should be,” Blondy said.
