Ski Shops

Skiing and outdoor sports of all kinds are a natural extension of living in Michigan during the colder months–it is great exercise as well as a way to bond with family. As a result, there are many quality ski shops around the area, and they staff experts in the field who will make sure you can get down the slopes in one piece.

These retailers also tend to offer great events that will gear up the whole group that is going skiing or offer you a chance to trade in equipment you’re ready to pass along to someone else. You can tune up what you already have with their specialized staff, who can take in almost anything and prepare it for a season on the mountain.

Here are some area ski shops that will help people of all ages prepare for a good time this winter out and about. Let’s hope for great snowfalls!

Schummer’s Ski Shop

Everyone on the East side knows that if you’re serious about skiing or even if you have a kid that’s new to the slopes, Schummer’s is the place to go. This unassuming shop is located right on Mack Avenue just off of Vernier (or Eight Mile to everyone outside of Grosse Pointe’s bubble) in Grosse Pointe Woods. They are experts on pretty much everything that has to do with skiings, so beginners to experts shop here.

The Silverado is the truck that works as hard as you do.

Nichols Ski and Snowboard

Dearborn is home to this premier ski and snowboard shop, so make your way to its doors if you want great advice and products. Nichols Ski and Snowboard carries a full array of equipment and accessories for getting on the slopes. It also has a full-service Wintersteiger tuning shop if you need that help. There’s also a Waterford location if you’re in Oakland County.

Don Thomas Sporthaus

Located on Old Woodward in Birmingham, Don Thomas Sporthaus has been outfitting Metro Detroit with skis and related equipment for more than 70 years. They carry everything from skis and boards to boots, bindings, outerwear and more. The store also has a full-service ski and snowboard workshop in the back that offers tuning and mounting.

Boyne Country Sports

If you want ski equipment that works and you can take directly onto the mountain, this is your store. Boyne Country Sports is a Michigan mainstay with locations in Grand Rapids, Novi, Bloomfield, Petoskey, and Traverse City as well as two resort locations at Boyne Mountain and Boyne Highlands. Bottom line: They are experts on making you warm, effective and a better skier.

Sun & Snow Sports

This store calls itself the “winter headquarters” for Southeastern Michigan for good reason. Ann Arbor is just a short ride away if you want to get some quality help with getting your skis ready, picking up new items and helping your kids fall in love with this outdoor activity. The store also holds regular ski and snowboard swap events, so you can trade in and trade up if you’re looking for new gear for a new year.
