There’s really nothing better than heading out to a Detroit football, hockey or basketball game. That is, however, unless you are the designated driver. If you’ve drawn the short straw this time, know that your friends appreciate your sacrifice dearly. However, that appreciation may or may not hold much merit when you’re sipping on a bottled water all evening.

How can you and all of your friends enjoy a night out in downtown Detroit or Auburn Hills and still get home safely? By taking advantage of one of the many safe ride home services the Metro Detroit area offers. Unlike calling a cab, these services drive your car home for you, so there’s no need to go back and pick it up in the morning. Everybody wins! Here are a few that you’ll want to immediately program into your phone:

Detroit Designated Driver LLC. is based out of Redford, but services all of the Metro Detroit area. Upon scheduling a pickup, the two-person team will arrive at your location. One, the driver, will take you and your group home safely. The other, the chase, will follow behind until you reach your destination.

You can reserve a chauffeur in advance, hire a team for a large party, or call when you are ready to be picked up at the end of the night. The service area covers a large portion of the metro area, and pick-up costs $40 (which includes the first five miles of travel, it’s an additional $2 after that).

The Silverado is the truck that works as hard as you do.

Safe Way Home LLC. is based in Roseville, but covers a similar span of the Metro Detroit area. The designated driver service employs licensed chauffeurs who can safely get you around Macomb, Oakland, Wayne, St. Clair, Livingston, Monroe and Washtenaw counties.

Vehicle rates start at $70, which includes the first ten miles of transportation. After that, each additional mile costs $3. I would recommend that you and your group of friends all get dropped off at one spot, because each additional drop off costs another $10. But, you can’t put a price on safety! Discounts are available for military, veteran, reservist and law enforcement personnel, as well as fire fighters and city officials.

Designated Driver Services of Waterford serves local areas including Detroit, Birmingham, Novi, Southfield, White Lake and everywhere in between. You can make a reservation or call in to request a ride, but keep in mind that you may have to wait if you choose to do the latter. Designated Driver Services also offers a membership, details of which can be found on the website.

Prices vary depending on location: if you’re starting or finishing in Oakland county, pickup costs $30. If you’re outside of the area, pickup costs $50. Either way, you’ll be paying $3/mile, and $5 for any additional stops you make along the route. While this may seem like a lot of money to shell out in addition to your night out, keep in mind the following statistic provided on Designated Driver Services’ website: the average person spends $15,000 on drunk driving fees, so really this is a steal. Plus, you get to keep your license!

We all love cheering on Detroit sports teams, whether your favorite to root for is hockey, basketball or football. Just remember to do so responsibly! Head to all of the above websites to check out each service and see which is the best for you. Then, go ahead and make a reservation, or program the numbers into your phone for future reference. You never know what could happen, and it’s better to be safe than sorry.
