Labor Day is upon us and sadly it marks the unofficial end to summer for most of us here in Metro Detroit. With the start of school and fall events right around the corner, Labor Day typically marks the last hoorah for all things summer. But there’s no need to feel so sad just yet! The long weekend is the perfect time to head out and experience some of the area’s unique and fun events before we settle in for the fall. If you’re looking for something to do this Labor Day weekend, be sure to check out one or more of these amazing events in and around Metro Detroit.

MICHIGAN STATE FAIR

August 31 – September 4, 2023

The Michigan State Fair is a five-day event filled with attractions, exhibitions, food, and competitions galore. There’s truly something for everyone to enjoy at this yearly event. “It is the year of Pumpkin at the Michigan State Fair…On the first day of the Fair join us at the Main Arena at 6:00 to watch the Giant Pumpkins be weighed in to determine who will take home the grand prize and maybe even set a record! Last year in 2022 there was a national record set for the Nation’s longest Gourd at 154 inches! Another exciting feature is being introduced this year is My MI Farmland, a new interactive exhibit to help bring more Michigan Agriculture to the MI State Fair,” says McKenzie Bowman, the Marketing and Operations Manager for the Michigan State Fair. BAVARIAN INN WOODEN COVERED BRIDGE LABOR DAY WALK

September 4, 2023

713 South Main Street, Frankenmuth

The Bavarian Inn Wooden Covered Bridge Labor Day Walk is an annual event attended by residents and visitors alike. “Since 1986, hundreds of Frankenmuth residents and guests have come together for the annual Bavarian Inn Wooden Covered Bridge Labor Day Walk. The covered bridge (Holz Brücke), originally built in 1980 and restored eight years ago. This year’s event begins at the east side of the 239-foot structure, which spans the Cass River between the Bavarian Inn Lodge and the Bavarian Inn Restaurant. After crossing the bridge, Frankenmuth residents and visitors are invited to gather at the Fischer Platz, the restaurant’s outdoor café located along Main Street, to enjoy free musical entertainment along with their favorite food and beverages that will be available for purchase,” says Amy Zehnder Grossi, Bavarian Inn Restaurant President.

ARTS, BEATS & EATS

September 1 – 4, 2023

Downtown Royal Oak

Arts, Beats & Eats returns to downtown Royal Oak for its 13th year of celebrating artists, musicians, and the culinary scene. This four-day festival draws thousands of visitors each year with delicious cuisine, a bustling art scene, and nine stages for various genres of music and performance. The festival highlights also include a 5k, a fashion show, and a Zumbathon. This is a great event for families with plenty of activities and events specifically tailored for kids of all ages.

DETROIT JAZZ FESTIVAL

September 1 – 4, 2023

Campus Martius and Hart Plaza, Detroit

The Detroit Jazz Festival was founded in 1980 by Robert McCabe to bring people into Detroit and give them world-class entertainment. As the world’s largest free jazz festival, they bring in more than 60 artists from all over including those who are newcomers, rising stars, legends, and Detroit natives as well. This is a great way to immerse yourself in the sound and culture of jazz music.

ROMEO PEACH FESTIVAL

August 31 – September 4, 2023

The Romeo Peach Festival is celebrating its 92nd anniversary this year. This five-day festival is an annual tradition that is not to be missed. From parades to car shows, and live music to carnival rides, there’s something for everyone to do at the Romeo Peach Festival. The festival runs all day and into the night and is great for families as well as adults.
